Another demo reel thread

http://www.dailymotion.com/Thunderll...eel_shortfilms

From the looks of the other thread, it seems I'll get much more intelligent opinions here than anywhere else.

These clips are taken from the short I'm working on. I personally think the cuts are a bit too fast around the end, but I wanted to end it at a time that fit with the music.

Go with 16mm letterbox.

Music is distracting - lower level 25%, or find a new choice

time 00:00:08 - 00:00:12 are way too jumpy. Slow down or take some of the cuts out.

Put at least one establishing shot in the middle (at the table when he pulls a gun). Will take down confusion and be a good grounder.

Do you mean 4:3? I used the aspect ratio I did out of necessity. A lot of the filming was done in a rush and mistakes were made, so it allows me to improve poor framing and hide boom poles that sneak their way into the frame. It was initially shot in 16:9.

Nevermind then - if that's what you need to do.

you know, I just watched it again - and if nobody else has any complaints about 8-12 sec section, don't change it. Third time through it felt fine.... although I guess you are going for first impression. *shrug*

I like it. Looks like an interesting short. You need to work on your lighting, although in some parts it looks really nice, particularly the gun dolly and when the gun is pulled on that guy in some grundgy place. Its nice to see some other people are doin' film around here

Lowering the music level wouldn't do anything, it's the only audio. So it's entirely dependant of the volume of the viewer's speakers. The establishing shot's a good idea. I'll see what I can do about that.

My main problem with this production so far is my complete incompetence when it comes to colour correction. My day to night conversion turned out way too blue, and I'm only getting limited success with doing correction to suit a mood. Does anyone have any advice when it comes to adjusting curves and levels? So far most of the tutorials I've found are pretty useless.

I liked it a lot as well. Could've used better lighting though. Keep up the good work.

This is the first time I've put any effort into lighting, and it's pretty primitive. Usually consists of finding a lamp, making a deflector and getting it on the subject. I've been meaning to throw together a lighting kit of some sort with work lights and china lanterns from home depot...

Well the lighting wasn't horrible in the video, which shows you put effort into it.

You should stick around the ST: P. We need more people like you.

Haha. Well I'm glad you think so. Some of your fellow members don't share your feelings after my last thread.

your last thread told us that photography wasn't a valid art form, you were honestly surprised the general consensus was that you're a ****face?

Where did I say I was surprised?

Well actually, a few people harassing me in completely unrelated threads was a little bit surprising. But really, let's leave that subject alone.

meh... *******.

the only thing i don't like about it is that it doesn't seem to showcase much range as a cinematographer... i watched it last night but from what i remember there is the gun loading scene, someone gets shot, and a girl runs and screams soundlessly or some ****. you're pigeonholing yourself

Sorry to say, but I liked it (shouldn't mean much to you, afterall we're all participants in the lowest form of art). One thing I need cleared up though.

Can you explain to me the validity of filmography?

Didnt do much for me. The song was annoying as hell and...I dont know, the shots just werent doing it for me.

I will say that on some shots, the lighting was done well.

I understand why you might think this - but you have to also keep in mind a few things : He didn't build a set, which means him and the camera, as well as the actor(s), all had to be in the bathroom. There isn't much room to frame in one of those.
