North Dakota 5-man tourneys

The North Dakota Army National Guard is putting on a series of 5-man Open tournaments. The tourneys are free to teams but you have to buy paint at the field. The paint runs from $35 (Diablo Heat), $43 (PMI Premium) $45 (MidEvil), $50 (All Star and Marbalizer) and $55 for Evil. HP Air (3000 only) and CO2 at field, costs vary.

Prizes range from free paintball gear and National Guard stuff (Booney hats, T-shirts, back-packs, sweatshirts and hoodies) to Trophies for 1st through 4th.

Here's a list:

Sept 8th - Battle for the Badlands II in Dickinson, ND. Registration deadline is the 4th of September but call to see if theres an opening. This will be a Round-Robin tournament with the top 4 teams advancing to finals. Last years event there was 12 teams that played. Teams came from as far as Billings, MT and Mandan, ND. Call Scott Decker at 701-290-2977 to get your team in the mix.

Sept 15th in Minot, ND- 1st speedball tourney for the area call Chance Schaffner for details at 701-420-5903 or 701-721-7433

Sept 22nd in Devils Lake, ND call Dean Lundin for details 701-662-4648

Sept 29th in Williston, ND call Chris Forsberg for details at 701-774-4327

The last three tournaments will be straight bracket tourneys (Double elimination).

The National Guard had a tourney in Bismarck on the 4th of August and 18 5-man teams showed up. Some had speed ball experience and some didn't but it was one fun tourney and everyone came away wanting more.

What I am trying to establish is a tournament circuit put on by the National Guard in North Dakota where there will be 8 major tournaments with the top 4 teams meeting in Bismarck at years end for one great big speedball battle (possibly indoors). The turn out has been great so far and this will help me push for the circuit next year.

Hope to see your team at one of the events!

Thanks for the update!!

I've been trying to get a winners list from Eric Binstock.

The National Guard in North Dakota is going to try and put together a series for next year. One major tourney in each major city (Fargo, Devils Lake, Minot, Williston, Dickinson and Bismarck)( I don't know if Grand Forks, Jamestown, Valley City & Wapheton will be on board).

My idea and the one I proposed to our higher ups, is to have a series with a cumalative points total. Each event will have an event winner plus points down to 10th place. These will be open events and will not have a class ranking (i.e. Rookie, Novice, and Amatuer/Semi-pro) since no money exchanges hands on either side (NO ENTRANCE FEES- NO PAYOUT).

We are looking at getting a travel trailer with a HP compressor and CO2 capabilities. Also more bunkers (6 to 10) to fill up the field a little more.

What I am looking for is some input on what kinda rules we should play by.....Should it be open, NPPL, PSP, etc etc.

The one think that is tough is getting the same refs and making them aware of the rules. We have had some decent refs in Dickinson (Same crew two years know) and the teams have been really good about not cheating

The thing is at the end of the year there will be a series champ and hopefully a year end big indoor tourney......

(We're working on something right now for a possible indoor tourney yet this year..... )

any comments about this year and ideas for next are welcome!!!!!

The "open" classification is great. This is the first tournament in the FM/GF area that I've been able to participate in since moving here.

The HPA issue is an concern. They used a couple scubas here and most teams were getting sub 1000 PSI fills by the end and running out of air in games.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the National Guard effort. They need to shore up their safety and learn how to net though...

The nets gonna be an issue until we get more.

I know at the tourneys I've run here safety was the #1 issue, don't know how they ran theirs.

We have a good start but we need to get better. HPA is always an issue unless you have a compressor or experienced people on the scuba tanks that don't drain them all on one fill. 1800-2000lbs a fill should be plenty a game. I shoot an Evil Minion and its a gas hog and I get through a game. A thousand would be a bad fill though.....thats why i am working on the trailer with a HPA compressor on board with the nice fill stations.

I wish there was a paintball store that we could co-host with throughout the year but most of these stores are fly by the seat stores and have no real business model except make easy profits. Then when it gets slow and tough they give up like a company of french infantryman......

Only reason I want to keep it open is that there would be a huge rookie division and small novice and non-existant amateur/semi-pro. Everyone has to cut their teeth at some time and if you come to one of these tourneys talking smack you better back it......a lot of people fiqured that out this year. The teams that practiced and worked on shooting drills and team commo did well ......the others, not so much

i wish they had HPA at the tournies cuz we had to use some from LTN who are awsome we played at the minot turney and took 2nd o yea. I hope they keep this up and post the dates i would gladly travel a few hours for the bis and DL turneys. they did a good job with it but the refs were new but o well and there was a huge part of the netting missing which was ok i guess good job overall.

I was in the Battle of the Badlands, I can't remember my team name... the Flying Squirrels, I think? Was a fun tourney, even though we placed second to last... if only I'd had my PMR running! Next time... next time...

darkside-in Brookings, SD. its tiny and has ****ty lighting.

Air Assault-best indoor field in the region. 2 and a half hours east of fargo in
Maple Plain, MN. lots of good players to practice against here.

Metro Paintball Games- nice indoor field. Not even as close to as big as Air Assault but still nice. located in Omaha, NE.

I played the Fargo event and had a lot of fun. A couple of suggestions though:
Get a CHRONO
The refs should have a basic understanding of paintball rules (they were counting bounces as hits)
Have enough HPA
Make it a 3 man or a 5 man, none of this 4 man business
One problem the fargo event had was that teams dropped out last second as well as players. If you charge a small entrance fee I think this will help with this problem. Take that revenue and use it to purchase items to be given away as door prizes. (Dont give out a cash prize to first place cuz that encourages cheating, and for now this should just be a fun event)
And finally GET AHOLD OF LOCAL PAINTBALLERS IF YOU NEED HELP OR SUGGESTIONS

I am looking forward to more NG Tourneys.

PS. el pengo: is that you bfk???
