Homemade Rockets & Fuel

So I finally order everything I need to make my own rocket fuel and engines. Once I get down how to make the fuel properly I will attempt to make a tube launched series of rockets. Hopefully I will be able to make a model icbm so it launches from the ground in a silo. I will get pics of everything as I go along.

1. KNO3 - its part of the propellant
2. Bentonite clay - to make the rocket nozzles
3. Grog - it helps hold the nozzles together

4. Pyrotechnic fuse - to light the engines

My first attempt at a nozzle. Its not too bad but I need to cut my pipe more evenly and when school starts again I will be able to use a lathe to set my nozzles at dead center.

My fuel and Oxidizer:

A fully prepared rocket(except for fins because I have no balsa wood):

After a test fire:

This is where I got all my information http://shadow.yak.net/125.

instead of the fuse wouldn't you want an electric igniter? like this?

then you can push the big red button to launch it

and it would probably make it safer

Pimp thats all..

Oh and i would want one that hade like 20 steps to make it launch. Like in a really stupid funny movie were they do like 100000 things that could be done in 2

You should get one of those "easy buttons" and rig it up to be the ignition switch

here is what i was going to do.

the Co2 would be there to help keep the rocket cool from over heating
the black is the electical to make the injectors work
the green dots are the spray injectors
the orange is the combustion chamber
the red is the rocket fuel
i made this in like 5 minutes. i know its bad

right...a missle...meaning that it has some sort of guidance control or a way of changing it's path. totally illegal meaning, no you don't have one and you forgot the

Well mine is a solid fuel rocket so it would not have a separate fuel and combustion chamber. Also you design would not work unless you have some major experience in liquid fueled rockets. I am assuming you don't because there is no real need to a coolant on a rocket.

but, if it was an oxygen tank up top, with a special injector on the end of the nozzel, then you have a massive amount of power ^^

Idk, it kind of looks like the co2 would quickly put out the flame, and generally when dealing with rockets, as opposed to jet engines, cooling is not usually an issue, because the flame doesn't last all that long.

Also, imo, it would be better to use the 20 oz for structure e.g. the body, and it would make a good solid way to mount an aluminum nozzle which I think would give you more thrust.

And I just noticed, potassium nitrate(salt peter), and sugar? For fuel?????? That is exactly what they gave out in the anarchist cookbook for smoke bombs, and when they showed it on mythbusters, it just didn't burn with that kind of energy.

Feel free to pm me.

well sugar would be just for smoke. If you make it kn03 and sucrose(a form of sugar) it should burn more effectively. That is why you have to mix in karo syrup.

I love rockets! I've built tons of 'em.
You are restricted to 1000' cieling without FAA waivers.
My most powerful was a 3-stage 3-D's that went Waaaaaayyyy out of site.
You can buy rocket motors, propellents, housings, ignitors, etc. at most hobby shops.

yeah I have done that many a time before. My one 3 foot rocket the "prowler" was modified it to accept a larger engine and we deffinately went over 1000 feet with it.
