Synthetic Virus . . . implications for the future.

I ran across this while reading some news. I trust that the scientists know what they are doing, but seems scary to me if power goes hungry with some scientists.

Seems like we are closer to some kind of bad movie in real life!
Pretty cool none-the-less though.

Any thoughts on it?

It's fine. No real scientist is going to go mad and decide to terrorize the world with his man-made viruses. That's comic books, welcome to the real world. It's much more dull...

Its a type of virus called a bacteriophage (like the on in my avatar). What it does is uses the bacteria's hardware to produce an enzyme that destroys the extracellular matrix of the cells, so they can't aggregate together into a film. It can only transfer its genetic material into bacteria cells, and the enzyme produced only effects bacteria cell matrices.

While its very possible with current technology to do the same to, say, Influenza, and infect humans with it. It still requires a lot of time, money, and research. Also, everything we can do in a microbiological scale has already been done much better by mother nature.

If they're going to turn it into something "bad", it better be a zombie virus. Because come on, zombies are just so much more bad *** than dying from the flu or something.

I think the worry isn't so much a mad scientist, I think it is more worrisome if some sort of virus got lose on the populace.

Like Mv said, it would only affect bacteria which would be a good thing. And why would any scientist create a virus that is bad?

edit - it appears that it is blocked at my firewalls, since others can still access it (I still can not, from work).

It probably won't be a mad scientist, more like a government contractor hired to work on 'experimental prototypes'.

link still works for me.

I'm not so worried about a scientist making it, and I believe they have it under control.

But with adaptation of viruses anyway, could it be possible that a synthetic virus mutates? Maybe into something that is detrimental to mankind.

I know that I'm speaking out of ignorance. My main reason is that it sounds like a bad movie in real life, which isn't really "real" anyway.

But it does sound like the beginning of Dawn (or Shawn) of the Dead

Apparently this virus doesn't replicate itself, so it won't mutate since it doesn't have offspring.
