you can get a pmi 68/45 brand new for 150 on avi.

You are going to want a good mask... dont overlook that

i bet you can find etek.05 ego+tank and egg2 for less than 500
ions are simple to take apart

yea but with 500 he could get a mini or something a little better than a Ion. If he has problems use the web or take it to the shop. I would only say the resale value sucks fo Ions. Then again buy a used Ion for $120 theres a good deal. Also does this guy want to play woodsball or speed. Makes a difference if woods go with a tippmann A-5. Tippys are very dependable and almost never break

Please listen to this; if you buy something for cheap it will be worthless to you if you continue to play constantly for three months, and if you decide to quit it will not have any resale. I suggest buying a basic high end gun. If your looking for new than go with a NXT/PM7/ETEK. If you want used get something higher end or a high end package like a SFT package or DM5 package etc. The new guns will fetch a pretty penny or be great for you, the used guns you will get great performance for the price and a better resale. Paintball guns really aren't difficult to understand as long as your willing to take an hour or two to learn your gun. Good luck.

i would not spend 500 on my first paintball set up. that is an awful lot of money to throw out there and you may not even stick with the sport. i would look into a 98c package that comes with everything.

I have to agree with this as well. I still have my first tippmann 98 that I purchased (when they first came out) and it is a great loaner gun to friends that do not have a marker, good back up to a back up to a back up lol. Playing in the rain against your neighbor in your backyard gun.
