as the economy has declined some paint mfrgs have cut cost by making paint a little smaller. I just cleaned out my paintball bag to clean all the barrels I used last time, and I have 2 684s, 1 685. That is what I have used most often here lately.

That's cool. I was only able to get two sizes anyway, that's all they had
.684 & .690

I'm hoping I can find the other two sizes at some point. I just hope the two sizes that I was able to get will do ok. If you're using a lot of .684 I will hopefully be good.

Thanks Mann

2-Smart Parts Freak SS 12/20
2-Dye UL 12/20
2-ACI Phat 12/20
3-Kaner 11/20 hits
4-JJ Edge 10/20 hits
4-Smart Parts Freak Al 10/20
4-Palmer's Pursuit Shop Brass 10/20
4-CCM (Carbon fiber) 10/20
4-Custom Products 10/20
4-Empire 7pc kit 10/20 hits
4-Evil Pipe 10/20
5-McDev Matchstik 9/20
5-Empire Revolver (2007 Scepter) 9/20
5-Redz Pepperstick 9/20 hits
6-Hammerhead 8/20 hits
7-Stiffi 7/20
7-Sanchez Machine SM1 7/20

Mann, you have put alot of great work into this testing and I, just like every one else, am very appreciative of what you have done. I have read this thread all the way up until around page 15, then I got tired of reading about people arguing about the accuracy of guns and what role it has over the barrel. Below is what I have gathered based on the accuracy after barrel brake data on the first couple pages of the thread using number of hits and the clustering. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Rank --- Barrel
1. Scepter (2000 series)
1.5. TI Longbow Alum Series
2. Smart Parts Freak SS
3. Dye UL
4. Custom Products
5. JJ Edge

I was wondering, since you have done these tests, if you have gotten the chance to play around with any of the newer barrel kits such as the iFit, or deadlywind, or any others that have been produced in the last 3-4 years?

I have not used Ifit. I did get a dw barrel, and have a set of stainless as well as (custom)brass inserts for it (I have not played with it in quite a while tho). I believe that the ifit uses a 1" control bore iirc. Every barrel that we tested that did not have at least a 4" control bore did not preform well. Because of that I am not going to invest in any "new" barrel with less than 4" of control bore.

Do you still favor your longbow then or have you switched to something different?

If you get a chance to check out the Dye Carbon Fiber boomstick, give it a shot in your testing.

Kaner

Hi,

I didn't find anything looking briefly through the 35 pages.

The Kaner was the only one I cared about and it seems to be blank. Was this data removed?

Yes but only for the barrel break test.

It may have been. Some of the links broke so I deleted them.

Would you be so kind to fix the link?

I'd love to see how she compares to the UL.

About the same. I am not going to fix it any time soon. I am busy with school/work.

Starting back from the paint

My philosophy regarding barrel selection starts at the paint, since nothing can overcome the freshness of the paint; even quality paint that has been hanging around for a while can be outdone by a fresher, cheaper paint. Some fields require you to use their paint, and that is not unreasonable, provided at least one of their brands of paint is sufficiently high turnover and sparingly stocked so that you are reliably getting fresh paint. Ideally, the same paint would be not only available at all your local field paint fields, but similarly the freshest. This may not be the case, however; which could mean you may need to use different brands of paint on different fields, and possibly, differently bored barrels to match them. For this reason, it may be much more helpful to find out ďWhat barrels and bores most accurately shoot my reliably available and reliably fresh brands of paint?Ē, than to worry about the ideal scenario, because of factors like paint expense or unavailability of fresh batches of a certain brand of cheap paint.

However, from the data that appears to be posted (if a png image can be called data, I know you are working on the Excel files though), we only see information about 3 brands of paint. And while Recsport might be something Iím willing to try, I havenít seen it much locally; the other brands are simply too rich for my blood, and may not be fresh because too many others agree. I was hoping to see data about Stinger, because that is what Iím currently using; I also know that Diablo Heat is used very often locally, but the narrow diameter and unreliable weight give me pause. I really need the data on Stinger and Diablo Heat for a meaningful personal assessment of what barrel I should choose.

However, I wonder; have the paintballs changed in their production since these tests, thus negating any direct relationship between these barrels and the brand I might buy in a store today? Someone should do a check as Mann originally did, testing the average diameters of these brands of paintballs to within an 0.001 tolerance, testing to see whether they still lie within a Ī0.002 range, and testing the average weight and its variation. This is considerably less work than Mann originally did, and checking to see what he does not need to test again is a great way to pay him back! This will also verify which combinations are still directly relevant, and which are not, which will help everyone in their barrel choices!

Of course, even if direct relationships between a given barrel and a given paint no longer hold up, there are still uses for the old data! For instance, for a given diameter of paint, is there a given range of bore (actual, measured) that will give us more accuracy, or is it all over the map based on barrel or paint manufacturer? According to the data, is there a consistent way we should be sizing a bore to our paint, beyond merely not overboreing by 0.006?

Thanks to Mann for taking the Wright Brothers approach to Paintball Barrels. I tip my hat to you, sir! Well done!
