ROF of 0 will max it out at the BH board's cap (20bps).

i got an ion with a SP QEV, l6 bolt, cp reg, empire rail, dye-ultralite barrel, ndz feedneck, and stock board. i just set the dwell and ROF on it. my ROF is set at 0 and the dwell is at 14. fires great.much better than the 34 that it was set at before.

oh and the reg is set at about 165psi. prolly goin to have to tune that down a bit to get it under 300fps chrono though. i will find out when i go to the field.

If your Ion is stock you really should not be adjusting it.

I have an ION,Freak Barrel Kit ( All American Front),SP QEV, Skelton Bolt, Stock Board, 3000 psi tank, plus some.

I would like to poropose a new question.
Who cares about ROF if the paint is everywhere.
What I want to know is Pressure VS. Dwell. This might not be the proper question. Obviously I have my dwell set way high around 45 and psi is 180, fires about 300 fps. Paint breaks occasionally, now I understand why. Accuracy is good, but I know it should be better.
At such low dwell settings of 16 to 20 discussed earlier, what pressure would be average for my setup, I do some testing, but still new to the sport and tuning.
At some point PSI and dwell both affect bolt cycling, higher psi and lower dwell or higher dwell and lower PSI. I know at some point it effects ROF, but I want the best setup for accuracy over distance. I know paint plays a part so lets consider good quality paint is being used and macthed to barrel.
Where do you start?
140-150 PSI rasing the dwell until maxium accuracy for distance is achieved?
How would you approach it?

Thanks for any further insight.

285 fps is the standard for good accuracy. Around 300 fps is where you begin to see the balls curve wildly.

With a goal of 285 fps, the question I have is Pressure vs. Dwell.

What would create a more accurate shot?

A high pressure, low dwell setting would create a higher burst of air, but a lower volume of air. On the other hand lower pressure would need a higher dwell setting to reach the target velocity.

Is there a drawback to either setup?

I have my friend's Ion here.
He has a Virtue board, Virtue QEV, and a Shocktech bolt.
He lowered the dwell from the stock 30(On the Virtue board), to 15 once he put the QEV in. Because "The manual told him to."
So, he gave it to me to fix.
But now, his gun isn't fully cycling consistently.
I've tried everything. Starting from 0, all the way up to ****ing 50, and it still won't cycle fully.
It's really grinding my gears.

Halp?

It's likely some other problem, unrelated to the electroincs setting.

Run through this list.

· Clean and re-grease the bolt assembly. The assembled bolt should move forward and back with relative ease. If there is a large amount of resistance, there may be a damaged component, misaligned o-ring, or some other problem.

· Clean the solenoid armature. When you drop the armature into its housing, it should fall in and out when you tip it back and forth. If it doesn't, the solenoid mat be scratched or otherwise damaged, and need replacement.

· Venting hose or hose fitting may be damaged and preventing the bolt from venting as it should (which is necessary for the marker to fire). Replace the middle banjo fitting.

· If a QEV is installed, the QEV internal seal may be damaged and preventing the bolt from venting. Check this by installing the stock middle banjo then increase the dwell back up to 40-50, and test the marker. If it fires properly then the QEV was to blame; if it doesn't function then something else is the cause.

I've read what dwell is and such. but i would like to make sure i have this right... the lower your dwell is, the faster you can potentialy shoot? or is it the other way around?

Correct, just keep in mind if you set your dwell to low it will result in inconsistency of your velocity (bad accuracy) or causing your gun to not shoot at all.

Question Lower dwells on new stock Ions?

Here's a question for airsmiths with experience tuning many different Ions:

I worked on tuning the dwell on my new Ion last night. (I just have the stock board and no QEV.) I reduced the dwell the whole way down to zero blinks and began working my way up, per the published instructions.

To my untrained ear, at 25 blinks the marker seemed to by cycling perfectly. At 30, it definitely seemed to be. I still ended up setting the marker at 40 blinks out of fear that I simply couldn't detect any inconsistencies.

Is it possible that my stock Ion might operate fine at a dwell setting of 30??

Also, what kind of symptoms would an Ion exhibit (when actually firing paint) if the dwell were set too low?

If set too low, it wont fire at all. if set to high, it might make your marker shoot hot. I never adjusted the dwell on the stock board on my ion, and i did have a qev. however, if it seems to cycle just fine at 30 blinks, give it a try one day. fine tuning your dwell and other settings are pretty much trial and error. At least thats how its been for me. However, if i were you i would invest into a qev, and an aftermarket board if you want alot more control over you settings. I bought a blackheart for mine. It's not the "leetest" by todays standards, but it definately gives me way more controll over my fine tuning settings. hope this hlps some bud. GL.
