My "Anti-Religion"

Sorry for making a user-specific thread, but I felt like it was necessary.

I have seen a few comments here and there about me being standoffish, anti-religion, etc. Now, I'm not saying it was wrong you said that. By the way I usually do my posts, I do seem against Christianity. But let me tell you why I have such enmity towards Christianity (note: NOT Christians).

I am the only child in a very religious family. I was brought up Catholic, and have gone to church every Sunday since I was a baby. I have not missed a week of church in over 5 years. I also go to a private Catholic school where religion classes are mandatory (believe me I'm thankful for going to private school except for the religion part).

A year ago I realized that I didn't believe in Jesus or the Bible. I have many reasons for it, none of which need to be discussed in this thread. But I have not told my parents. Why? Well, my mom is a strict Evangelical Christian and believes in Creation. My dad is a stricter Catholic Literalist and beleives if you don't go to church every Sunday you're a bad person. I would be disowned, grounded for life, taken out of their will, etc. if I found out. Think of it this way: Would you rather think your son is going to Heaven or know he is going to Hell?

Now, you're probably thinking "Good, they should be making you go to church and you should believe in God". Well, let me put this in perspective for you:

You are a Christian. Both your parents are Atheist. They ridicule the Bible on a daily basis and force you to get up early and go to freethought meetings every weekend that bash the Bible and point out its flaws. You go to a school where you are forced to take Anti-Christianity classes that teach the Bible isn't true, along with every other religion. On the tests in these religion classes, you must answer questions like "God is not real: True" otherwise you will get a bad grade, thus lowering your GPA and hurting your college transcript. You do not know any other Christians. When you tell people you are a Christian, they look down on you and suddenly stop talking to you.

Now, it doesn't sound very good does it? It's what I go through on a daily basis (except, of course, with Atheism instead of Christianity). I'm not looking for pity; that is the absolute last thing I want from you. I just want you to understand why I dislike the beliefs of Christianity, Creationism, Catholicism, etc so much. I have nothing personally against Christians. I only dislike those who force their beliefs on others.

Thank you for your time.

GE

The only thing that I can't relate to is the "free-thought meetings", but I'm over 18

I'm a Christian, both of my parents are atheist - I get plenty of crap for going to "Messiah College"/. I went to Public School my entire life. My first few years of college (my first one), I had to take a Psychology class with heavy emphasis in Evolution, as well as other Biology classes with emphasis on Evolution even when none was needed. Also, an archeology class. I've told really none of my good friends that I'm a Christian. If I did, I would be made fun of and ridiculed. My Christian friends range from my roommate, and the kids at my bible study (even though I go to a Christian school, I'd say there is a 50/50 mix. Since I can't stand most Christians, I tend to hang around them).

Either way, I like atheists, much better people than Christians.

Be more open about it, tell em your beliefs but don't argue against them, try to argue with them.

Solution:

Sit them down, look them in the face and say "mom, dad...I am gay" when the shock hits them, and they start to flip out grin say "no no I was just kidding, I however no longer believe in god or jesus. See isnt that better than the first option?"

sorry I couldnt resist, being serious now, im sorry your stuck where your at. here is to hopeing you can get away from your parents and out on your own. Congrats on being your own person and not caveing into the presure 'religon' forces on others.

Honestly man, I have no idea how anyone can muster up the balls to come out to their parents.

I did it, and it brought my dad and I closer. Its odd, I think he knew I was gay all along and was just waiting tell I figured out life for myself. Now he gets along great with my partner, and ive never been closer to him (thou his wife HATES me, she is one of them bible thumping cathloc types. I love doing things to piss that witch off).

Mom took a few weeks to understand, now she loves my partner too, and looks forward to sitting iwthhim. They share alot in common, hell sometimes I think she likes him better than me

I understand how you feel...
But soemtimes, suffering is good. Any belief IMO lives off of not only the "rewarding" aspects, but strives because of it's opposition. (i.e. the holocaust, the Roman emporer Nero...)

Yes, but your parents view your beliefs as "silly". My parents would believe I am forever condemned to Hell and that I'm a godless heathen.

Also, you are not forced to learn about Atheism or say that Jesus wasn't real in school. Otherwise your life is close to being opposite of mine.

Besides the fact it's slightly creepy that you're looking at my personal information, I was actually born in Jan 1991. I'm in 10th grade. I don't like to put a lot of my personal info on the internet (though I just did).

Sorry man, not much you can do I suppose, although I hope expressing your opnion here is enough not to push you into insanity or something.

As for jonathan, that was becuase you said you were smarter than all the Indians, so I wondered how much education you could have actually received...

Your parents seem like reasonably smart people that are well versed in the word....so they must know that they can not force you to accept Jesus/ believe in God. A belief in God is something that only God can put into your heart none other. Would I be disappointed by your beliefs if you were my son? yes, would I still accept you and love you as my son? yes( but if you were gay heck no J/K) I hope that you will find the courage to explain your views someday and also that your mom and dad will come to terms with it.

Don't do what I did. At Xmas mass I asked for a blessing instead of recieving the Eucharist. My parents flipped out. I explained to them that I did not believe in that anymore and I felt it would be disrespectful to those who do believe to take the sacrament. That was about a year ago and they're ok with it now. We joke about it even.

Of course, they were never as hardcore as your parents sound. Maybe wait it out a while.

hypothetical question goldeagle. if you were in the second situation, where you were were taught atheism your whole life, would you be christian?

i'm sorry you feel you're being force fed christianity in school. this may be a bad analogy, but being forcefed democracy in government class doesn't make it any less great. i disagree with the methods used to teach christianity, just as i disagree with methods used to teach many things.

if you want some advice, just go with the flow. if they want certain answers, give them their answers. you dont have to agree, but it will make things easier for everyone, and won't hurt your grades in the long run. i've had to take a few classes in school that were absolutely stupid. in 8th grade, i did my best to rebel against the idiocy of this one class. i went nowhere except the principal's and counselor's offices. now i've mellowed out, and those experiences serve to keep me from getting too worked up about any particular subject. just hang in there, and live with it. who knows, you may just come back to christianity

btw, if you think telling them you're not a christian will be bad, tell them you're converting to protestantism

then do so. we're not near as uptight as catholics

I actually think some Protestant branches are way more uptight than Catholics. Like Evangelists and Baptists.
