camera help please *fire wire question*

the video section just seemed like people posting video's, not helping solve problems.
ok, i've had my camcorder (panasonic miniDV) for over a year now but just never got around to buying a fire wire cable so i could get the video off of it. i have recently done so and i cant figure out what to do next. I properly connect the cable from the computer to the camera, put it onto the PC mode and it brings up a wizard and from there it tells me what to do. but once it get to the part where i select what part of the video i want, it tells me,
the DV device is not responding. make sure the device is properly connected and turned on.
it is properly connected and its turned on what do i do?
