Question to All Atheists

It's a pretty basic question:

Do you believe that there is no God or do you know that there is no God.

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized
discipline. But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion
on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.

If Christians can know that God exists then I can know that he doesn't. =P

I believe that there is no god. I don't believe there's a way to know for sure. I find it very very very unlikely that there is one.

ding

And to field the above - Christians don't know squat. They believe as atheists do, and any statements to the contrary are 100% pure bull****.

When the guy himself puts in an appearance, then they'll have an argument.

As much as I would like to believe their is a god I know their can't be. It's common sense. People believe in a god because they don't know answers to the secrets of lives and our creation. Religion is a crutch that they need to help them get through life. People feel safe when they believe in something.

Actually a pretty good question.

I know there could not be an omnipotent god because omnipotence is impossible and plain silly. But is there some strange sort of creator? I guess I don't know for sure.

I believe that noone really knows either way, including myself. There may be a god, or gods, but how can I be so sure which faith is true when so many cultures have their own faith systems. I guess that makes me an agnostic of sorts.

My philosophy entails the lack of belief in any God, rather than believing there is not a God. I think the correct terminology is 'Weak Atheism'. (Probably could be construed as agnosticism)

To know something is to have evidence of. If you know, don't you have to present evidence?

At almost 50/50% these poll results are suprising, but what I was kind of hoping for.

Now let me raise two more questions, one to those you believe God does not exist and the other to those who know God doesn't exist.

First to those who believe:
Why do you call yourself an Atheist, when you adopt a belief system that more closely resembles agnosticism, which is the belief that we cannot know? That is to say if you cannot know that there is no God, why do you affirm such a belief through the adoption of the title "atheist"?

And to those that know that there is no God:
How can you maintain a position that there is no probability of the existence of a God or higher sentinent being, when the human ability to know is not infinite? How are you any different than the Theist who asserts knowledge of God's existence? And how can you assert the lack of existence with only a lack of evidence?

Haha, are we trying to nullify all atheistic perspectives here?

Maybe a little, but my goal is really just to try to get everyone here to look at their philosophy or religion from a perspective other than Atheist vs Christian/Theist.

We can't know lots of things. I don't believe there is a God, I think that qualifies me as an atheist.

So you have faith that there is no God, despite no proof of God's nonexistence?

Strictly, i believe atheism means being without theistic beliefs. Theism is having a belief in god(s). An agnostic believes only in that which can be proven and is more a philosophy of knowledge, not really having to do with religion specifically. The term is also commonly used to describe the belief that the truth about the existence of a deity is unknown and unknowable.

I do not think it's an either or proposition. One can not believe there is a god (i.e., be an atheist), while at the same time believe that is it unknowable or unknown whether such a deity actually does exist (i.e., be an agnostic).
