Correct, you can not dye anything lighter than what it already is. A white frame can be dyed just about any color depending on the color dye. Heres some of my work:

pink would be too light to cover it up but purple would work.

So what had happened was, i decided to dye my red flex. The plan was to have black/red splatter bottoms, w/ black frame and red stripes down the side. Well the frames came out lookin pretty spiffy, decided to pull em out a bit early because it was a dark purple, and it had a kind of pearlescent feel to it in that it sometimes looked true black while in the light you noticed the red beam through. Then i came to the realization that flex7 bottoms have clearcoat. sigh. anyway:

pic was taken in a hurry, clearer ones on the way. pics of the bottoms after mr tooth brush and mrs acetone meet flexy, and then the whole dye proccess, take 2 thing.

actually for kicks i threw in an old spectra thermal, it did work, and i dont see too much harm as i put it in the dye towards the end when the dye solution cooled down considerably. it took to the inner layer quite well. i know about all the "dont touch your lense at all, your eyes arent worth lookin pretty" stuff, so before i decide to go blind myself, anyone wana enlighten me as to why this would be a bad idea?

The heat of the water could weaken the lens. idk thats a little to ghetto for me. thats the only thing I ever don't go "eh..it's good enough"

when i said that i meant it was barely warm, yet the dye took to it very well. i've been cleaning my lenses in hot water from the tap since the beggining, and the dye solution was a lot cooler than that, so i dont think heat is an issue at all, im more concerned about chemical mumbo jumbo and such. but from what i gather, there isnt any risk here, i just dont wanna be the guinea pig in this one
