Nerds/Geeks

Is there a "political"(I think I like using that for this lol) difference between a computer tech nerd and a video game nerd?

My buddy for example, he plays DnD, Warhammer, WoW, all FF games, and loves those wierd japanese import games. He is friendly but highly nerdy. He carries the nerdy appearance and probably wont touch a breast for another 10-15 years.

As for myself, I play mad FPS games, own a PS3 with only FPS's, dont play RPGs, and love the technical aspect of computers/programming. I lead a social life, hang out with cool people, and get girls.

Would I be considered a nerd and him a geek? I'm confused as to the difference between the two.

Guy that plays DnD and does nothing all day = geek.

you would be considered a geek. i'm like you and i consider myself a geek.

nerds are the ones who go into hiding for a month at a time to play wow, and dress funky.

geeks are guys who like shooters, tweaking comps (but not to the level of nerds), but don't spend their entire life in front of a screen.

I know but like, I spend all my time on electronics and ****. I feel like a nerd till I go to school.

But it seems like the "Geeks" that spend all their time on WoW and DnD and Warhammer are the ones who don't spend any time on their comp. Usually they are stuck with some crappy one. Like my buddy spends more time on WoW then anyone else I know, at anything for that matter. But he has a ****ty setup.

Let me set it up how I see it.
Gamers- Lead a life, have friends, but love video games more than the average guy. May do some programming, and even advanced computer work- but still has a life.
Nerds- 3.8 GPA unweighted minimum. Has a borderline fetish for electronics. Some of these people have a social life... some.
Geeks- These are the ones who you see at the anime and magic the gathering clubs at school. Spend all their time playing games, not exceptionally bright, just spend to much time playing games.

For some reason I'm fine with being called a geek, but nerd would probably piss me off.

'Hacker' is definitely the most misconstrued and inappropriately used term in the tech community. I don't care to delve into this topic nor do I consider myself to be one of these elite (not to over-exaggerate, but that's the most appropriate term I could think of) however, I don't find that your 11th grade Java programmer or the CSS guru to be considered a 'Hacker'.

Anyways, I always thought that both nerd and geek had negative connotations. I prefer technologically inclined or tech savvy or something of that sort. Ehh, I guess in reality what you define yourself as doesn't really dictate who you really are anyway.

I still think nerds are the smart ones with social lifes

geeks are the anime freaks and say pwn in history class cause they think it is cool.

I fall into the nerd category (as do all but a few close friends). My best friend falls into the geek/loser category.

I consider geeks to be people who have an extreme knowledge of what they do. Nerds are just losers.

I'm fit. I have a hot girlfriend. I go to college. I drink. A lot. I work. I gamble. I swear. I study. I also can answer almost any question about a computer and play video games during my free time. I sleep too.

I like to lump them in 2 groups.

Working and Rec nerds.

Working is pretty simple. They are the ones who have real tech jobs (sorry, Geek Squad does not count) and are active in the IT industry. Rec nerds are the Dnd/video gamer/whatever else nerds.

Now, with that said, just because you are in either of those groups, it doesn't mean you don't get laid. Thats all about the person. I know guys who have built some bad a** cars and such but will never feel the warmth of a woman.

Same thing, but Nerds are losers sometimes not of their own volition, sometimes they can't help being unliked

I'm not a nerd or a geek, I'm a person who plays sports, along with video games, is interested in computers, and has a social life. AKA Steve.

EDIT: Only nerds use labels
