the output pressure. ~450 it's LP, and ~850 it's HP. Crossfire also sometiems has colored regulators. Blue is LP, Red is HP.

if it doesn't specifically say on the tank, if you find an ASA with a gauge and screw your tank in, LPs will read around 450 psi and HPs around 800/850 psi.

If it's a crossfire tank, the regulator is blue if it's LP. For all intensive purposes, taking an ASA with a gauge on it and the other end plugged will tell you. Anything near or below ~450psi is relatively low pressure, and anything ~750psi and up is relatively high pressure.

EDIT: Hawkowned.

Yes it should if the gauge has the option of going up to around 900

On the marker itself, unless you have an adjustable tank...but you'd know if you had one of those.

this is probably a really common question, but is there a MAJOR difference in performance between a HP and LP tank?

The output pressure. If you use an LP tank on a HP marker, you could get dropoff and it may not even fully cycle. If you use HP on an LP marker, it may blow the reg/noid if is not regulated properly.

If you put an Low Pressure tank on a marker such as an Ion, you may experiance drop off, where the shots don't go as far as they should, and in some cases, it might deprive a marker of air so much, that the marker cannot fully cycle to shoot the paintball

dropoff is two things.
it can be where there isnt enough pressure in your gun to make the internals move back and forth the way that they should. this could result in the gun not firing. it can result in the marker not fully cocking. it can result in the marker burping. think of it like when a tank is too low on co2, or air, and the gun starts acting up because of it.

it can also be where there isnt enough air going thru the gun to properly propel a ball. that means decreased range, and decreased flight speed.
