Cool Shocker Slug bodies

There's enough people talking about this project so I wanted to start a new thread about it. The project is still long (update: not so long) from being done but I'll update this thread as we progress forward.
I initially delayed posting on this project because it hit a couple detours once I actually started making things. The details of the bodies got all shaken up and altered. I don't want people to read outdated information then buy a thing only to find out it changed. This is going to get confusing because the early version prototypes (the first few pictures of the project bodies) ended up getting redesigned and don't reflect the final version. I'll try to keep things organized.

Okay so here's the scoop. At some point in the futuretime I'm going to start selling unmilled Shocker "Slug" bodies that look like the ones seen in this post under the "current version" paragraph below. For completeness I have to show the original ones so people know what happened over the course of development.

Old bodies - outdated design:
My original prototype bodies look similar to OEM bodies but with a square shape. They're basically replicas of the stock/OEM Shocker bodies, using all the factory parts. The only main exception is the feedneck, which was replaced with a boss-latching style.

^ prototype slug bodies, revision 1.3 (this design is outdated!).

^ prototype slug bodies, revision 1.3 (this design is outdated!). (picture added May 23, 2014)

^ boss feedneck with one of my basic prototype feedneck housings. (same feedneck from Zealot prototypes, compatible with Empire/J4/Nummech)
(picture added May 23, 2014)

New bodies - current design:
After building the original prototypes I realized some changes needed to be made. The biggest change was altering the body in such a way that it uses a separate "transfer plate" component which does the job of the solenoid inserts. You still use a typical Shocker solenoid and manifold, but the inserts are no more. The body's internal air passages are sealed using 1x2.5mm o-rings (sealing between the transfer plate and body). Check the pics below!

^ Pre-production slug body with transfer plate. Please note that no screws are seen in the picture. (picture added July 21, 2014)

^ Pre-production slug body; disassembled view showing the body underside and transfer plate topside. (picture added July 21, 2014)

************************************************** *************

Changes being made: (version 2.3 bodies)
  • Eliminated the solenoid inserts and replaced them with a directly-ported "transfer plate" component.
  • Compatible with boss-latching feednecks from a Sniper/Vanquish/Resurrection/Torque/Zealot. These are MUCH more reliable than any threaded feedneck so I made the change. I will sell raw feednecks through Nummech if you want one, or you can get an anodized one from an Empire distributor/retailer.
  • Compatible with Autococker-threaded barrels.
  • (Added June 20, 2014) Enlarged air porting between the body and solenoid. This isn't necessarily a performance advantage; it depends on how you tune the gun.
  • (Added June 20, 2014) Added the option for a bolt speed adjustment via constricting the solenoid exhaust. This is the same thing done by the Smart Parts Air Vent manifolds, but instead I built it into the body. You will need a new solenoid manifold to take advantage of this feature, so this is optional! (but....each body has the ability to use it if you buy the right parts). See post number 219 for more information.
  • (Added June 20, 2014) The frame is relocated 3/8" behind the factory/OEM position. The distance between the frame and vertical adapter is now further apart. I can't move the frame any further back because the eye ribbon won't reach.
  • There's several other small changes to the bodies, but most are simply alterations done to make them easier to manufacture. No big deal!

Other characteristics:
  • Compatible with both SFT reflective eyes or NXT beam-break eyes. You can use either eye hardware regardless of the eye cover style.
  • Compatible with both SFT and NXT eye covers. You can use long-style threaded Impulse/ShockerSFT ball detents with SFT eye covers, or use the NXT 3-48 threaded screws with NXT eye covers. New detents/eyecovers will also be available at some point.
  • Compatible with all Shocker SFT/NXT fire chamber variations (the bodies do not have a "window" unless you choose to mill one).
  • Compatible with both SFT and NXT vertical adapters just like factory NXT bodies.
  • The frame has been shifted rearward by approx 3/8". Previously, some vertical adapters encountered compatibility problems on OEM bodies; these issues are most likely fixed with any Slug body since more space has been added.
  • Compatible with all factory Shocker SFT/NXT solenoids, manifolds, and frames. (note: if using an SFT frame, you may need to drill a small hole on top to make room for the transfer plate screw head. Not all frames need the mod.)
  • Extended raw material on the sides, front, and top of the marker body. Even the factory bodies didn't have this much material available!

What will be included?
  • Shocker Slug body with individual serial number. The serial numbers are directly milled onto the bottom of each body; the number will NOT come off through reanodizing.
  • Manufacturing prints that can be used to carry forward additional milling from the Slug body form. (click here for a PDF).
  • Optional: Slug unmilled eye covers (estimated cost is $30 for the pair)
  • Optional: Nummech boss-latch feedneck (estimated cost is $35)
  • Optional: Stainless steel "S.A.M." adjustable manifold (estimated cost is $25??)
  • Optional: basic 3-axis milling fixture (see info below)
  • Basic hardware for each body is included. (air chamber plug set screws, air port sealing o-rings) I have just about all other Shocker screws available if you need them.
  • Preliminary manufacturing prints for the "suggested" mounting fixture designs will also be available. These fixtures are one possible way to accurately workhold the body in order to access the top/left/right sides using a typical 3-axis mill. This is a preference area on part of the machinist, since everybody has their own ideas, but I'll help however I can. I will sell you a fixture if you want.

Who can buy one of these?
I will be selling these to anybody that wants one. However, the price will be lower for bulk purchases. Warning: I DO NOT recommend using a body without anodizing the screw threads, because they're easy to strip. Even if you want to use a brick body without milling it, please anodize first!

How many moneydollars???
At this point I'm not sure, I'm haven't finished running the numbers since the project is not finalized.

When will they be ready for sale?
I'm currently backed up until at least mid-2014. So I would guess they will be finished up in 2014 sometime.

SORTA KINDA UPDATES:
1. Concept of a body with integrated front-reg mount (FRM) can be found on post #145 - link
2. (sample CAD data removed - just download the real thing)
3. Unmilled "slug" eye covers can be seen on post #177 - link
4. Information on the SAM solenoid manifold can be found on post #219 - link
5. Preproduction bodies were finished up around post #254 - link
6. CAD files are now available. Go to the ZDSPB CAD file post and download all the things.

That's all I have for now. I can answer specific questions so long as things don't get too confusing. I warned you!!

Any chance we can get rid of the shocker manifold and plug the 'noid straight into the body with an integrated manifold/o'rings?

Great work! Through this project we may have never-before-seen Shocker models!

Oh, yeah: Can someone provide the appropriate measurements/dimensions to create a [second] limited run of G-Max Shockers ??

These are cool because of the obvious improvements being made to the platform, but the thing that's holding me back from being stoked as **** and ready to give you my money is the fact that i don't want to get this and then play with a lump of metal until I save another amount of money to have some milling designed and done for me.

I think you'd be more profitable if you offered a couple of basic/lightweight milling designs as well as a straight slug body, like maybe a simple milling pattern and maybe give people the option of having windows or not.

That's just my two cents though, great work regardless!

Should just create a new PL shocker instead of making more gmaxs

This.

Replicating an icon in paintball is just wrong. Be creative.
