Goldmember crack warning signs!
OK, running 1 quest with older goldmember, and the other with non-anno'd platinum goldmember.
Over the last 5-6 cases of paint, I started to see some wear below the feedneck at the breach just before the eyes. I changed O rings on goldmember (older) and could see no crack.
Used gun for 1.5 more cases, an upon re-lubing saw some wear off the anno on the goldmember. Also, I was getting FSDO (1 or 2 times) and some bolt stick at the end of the night (NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE).
I removed O-rings again, and the crack was evident at the center O-ring.
Here's my suggestions-
1- any time you see accelerated breach wear, check the bolt at the center o-ring- these changes should be a clue!
2- FSDO, bolt stick or wear that you normally don't see should alert you to CHECK the bolt.
3- My cracked goldmember was machined slightly off center, with the wear that occurred on the very front of the bolt on metal that was SLIGHTLY thicker than the non wearing side. It might be part of the batch problem they had. NO difference on EITHER of the new Platinum goldmembers... thickness exactly the same.
3- Know your gun, 30 cases of paint w/o breach wear, and a sudden change should be a clue. My suspicion was correct when I saw the change.
Hope this helps.
PS NO wear or changes on the newer platinum member (now these are anno'd gold, but same design)
