You kind of have to learn as you go. Unscrew it a few times, then shoot a few shots to see if the pin has disengaged, if not, screw it out more and try shooting again until the co2 is out of the gun.

The real simple method is to unscrew slowely until you hear it start to hiss..... then wait.
Eventually the hiss will stop, and finish unscrewing the tank

Dude, not to be a dick, but don't just unscrew it and wait for it to stop hissing cuz it WON'T. Do it my way

Well, if your going to shoot while unscrewing the tank, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR BARREL PLUG IS IN.

But, in my 15 years of paintball, I've never seen a gun that would leak forever. Usually 10-30 seconds, but I suppose its possible with a defective pinvalve, or valve-depressor.

Well if you do it the way I described you won't freeze and destroy your o-ring. But yeah, good call on the barrel cover/plug, or you could just do it at the chrono range, etc.

Don't forget when you unscrew your tank, there will probably be enough air in the gun to fire another shot, hence the reason hp_lovecraft said.
