If you are having a specific computer problem, please make a thread on it. You will get a ton more attention doing that than by posting in here.

Yeah, I figured after the first couple of days. Anyways, I ended up getting a 500w Antec psu and everything is running quite smoothly.

The only problem is that I'm running into slight stability issues. My computer sometimes restarts for no reason that I'm aware of. Sometimes it reboots and hangs on the initial ASUS screen, sometimes it just shuts off, and I can never predict when it will happen.

Could somebody please explain RAM speeds to me? I didn't want to post an entire thread on it.

Anyone can build a computer. Read up on them some and get familiar with that parts do what and you should be golden.

our current computer hdd is infected with many viruses, cant get them off, so my parents bought a new laptop. my question is, could i get a new hdd, put xp, or vista as the os, and run it like its new again. has a gig of ram, but ill probably bump it up to 2 gigs.

Yes, you can reformat the drive (which erases all the data on it and makes it like new) and reinstall an operating system. You don't have to buy a new drive, the old one will do just fine once you reformat it.

A reformat will wipe all of the data off of the drive, and that includes all viruses, spyware, etc. It's essentially a clean blank drive. Some people (like the Geek Squad) will tell you that viruses can survive after your hard drive gets formatted, but they are only telling you that because they want to sell you some of their stuff.

Ok, so I am mildly computer literate. I have watched someone put a computer together a few years back, and now that my monster PC is aging, I think it's time for a replacement.

Now, I don't really know where to start. I know the components I need, but I don't want to run around blindly buying things without knowing what's compatible with what.

My budget is somewhat limited, and I know the end result isn't going to be uber-1337 machine, I just need something that's cheap and packs a punch. I have a good monitor at the moment, so I only really need to worry about the computer itself. I'd like to keep the spending at around 7-800 all together. Is it possible to build a decent machine capable of handling all of today's releases and some of tomorrows for such a price? Any tips or recomendations?

the computer will run at the slowest ram speed though. So get the same speed of ram as the one you currently have, and make sure it is ddr2 or ddr depending on your motherboard.

If the ram you buy is faster, it will run at the speed of your current ram.

Hahaha. That's funny.

Anyway. I really want to build my own computer because it sounds fun and challenging (plus I need a computer). I want to spend only around $700-$800 dollars (not including the monitor).

I would only be using for light gaming (like Starcraft and Starcraft 2 [a man can dream!] and Counter-Strike), lots of audio playing and recording, Photoshop, and movie making.

That is reasonable right? I'm looking around on newegg, but it is all very confusing to me. I especially need help on choosing a mobo. They confuzzle me.
