Eh few revisions...

get a 320mb... unless you're running 24" monitor with AA and AF, a 320mb performs just as good as the 640 (I have one running a 24" monitor and it's fine)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130082

That'll save you about $100...

Get the Patriot 2 x 1 GB deal (I think it's $60 after rebate) super good ram and another $70 saved...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220144

Then I'd get a DVD Burner (Just nice to have) for $10 more...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151153

get a Seagate drive... way more reliable...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148140

And then finally get a different case with a higher-quality PSU...

I don't really have any recommendations for Mobo or CPU... that's just preference...

My parents are running on an old Dell that I think is going to hit it's 5-year mark this christmas. Gonna try to get them to buy this list and build one for them. Gonna install Vista Ultimate.

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion...NewParentBuild

Looks like a pretty good build for ~$700 imo. Gonna step up the HDD though, and get a more reliable DVD burner.

E6750 > E6600 and is $20 cheaper.

You also have an IDE DVD drive and then a SATA DVD burner. Your mobo supports both but I think it's kinda goofy to do that.

They don't need conroe, two gigs of ram, or even a 500 gig hd.

If your parents were computer savy they would know what to get, the very fact that you are coming up with a build for them tells me all they do is surf the net, download pictures, do basic email/word processing, and they might even play solitaire once or twice. You might as well save them some money and build a machine that suits there needs.

Get a modest amd dual core build, 1 gig of ram, and 320 gig hd. Hell you can even spring for onboard video seeing how it won't even matter.

edit: just saw that you are installing vista, two gigs would be deemed necessary to have a stable system without any choke ups. I still think you can skimp out on the cpu, gpu, and hd.

Doesn't make the video card "absolute ****"

Obviously if their dell is 5 years old I doubt they're playing BF2... or MMOs

It's common sense, you felt the need to bash the video card when for $40 it works in Vista and will run for anything they need, doesn't have a fan to breakdown and cause overheating problems, and won't be loud.

the fact that the card only has 128MB of VRAM on it and uses the other 384MB from your systems memory (as i understand it) would be enough for me not to buy the card, even if it was for a computer for my parrents. and the fact that vista already uses 512mb of RAM, it will be like his PC only has ~1GB of useable RAM in there, its going to get used up pretty quick with moderate multitasking.

It doesn't use the physical memory unless it's needed, called Turbo Caching...

So yea 1.5 gigs of ram is enough for Word, IE, and Windows Media Player......

hehe, just to bash your head in on this

P4 Williamette core @ 1.6Ghz
nVidia GeForce 2 <<(holy f***)
700-something mb of RDRAM

purchased from Dell early 2001, runs WoW at high res perfectly, and used to run BF1942 like it was on steroids, finishes F@H WU's in about 4 days usually.

I'll give you 5 bucks if you point out 1 situation (other than flashing BIOS) where you actually NEED a Floppy drive. save your monies and get a nice 2-4 gig flash drive.
uhh, other than that, looks ok. it'd be nice to know what mobo you're getting so we can flame... erm, suggest that you go for DDR2 if you can, bc if you go for DDR1, you're about 2 generations behind now.
oh, and that may be like uh... $6-700 tops? idk, didn't really look it up, just guessed off the top of my head. It shouldn't be too horrible, bc DDR isn't that expensive now, and i'm guessing the 8500 isn't a wallet-breaker, either.

Your claim of "high res" and "perfectly" can be very opinionated... The only bad thing listed is the GeForce2...

I setup a P2 350 (Slot style!) with 256mb of ram and an MX440 to play UT2004... It was at all of the lowest settings and lowest resolution (I think 400 x 300) but it still got 30fps and was playable... everything looked like **** though

ahahaha, nice! my compy is a P3 (slot) with a geforce deux (ironically, that was an UPGRADE) and it runs UT04 alright. i dont really play on it anymore, but it gets Firefox and Trillian well so i'm happy.

btw hi res is like 3 or 4 notches below highest possible and perfectly is not laggy, lol

Just going to use it from Gaming School work and photoshop
