Really, religious people turn to themselves as well. When they get an impulse or a hunch, they decide God gave it to them.

I turn to myself. Rather than waiting for god to solve my problem, I bust my *** to fix it myself.

you probably said something to the effect of "God isn't real and those who should believe in him should be executed via firing squad".

Here is what people are afraid to admit to themselves. We are alone on this world, most people can't accept this idea. We are alone, sure we live with others but ultimately, we are alone. Everything we do in our life is our own. When we have problems, only WE can solve them. Don't look to others for your help, you can look to yourself for the solution. This is a much more difficult life then just praying to God, but it is far more fulfilling. You train your own mind. Our minds are pretty amazing, but if we never challenge or train them, they are nothing.

I have had problems with anxiety my whole life. I turned to everything, God, psychologists, drugs, and family, but I still had bad anxiety. I was pretty frustrated that I was trying to get help, but nothing was working. Then I started examining my own mind, meditating, and although it is still there, my anxiety is significantly better since I started trying to help myself. Every emotion we feel we can control, sometimes it won't be easy, but we can.

Probably because it's easier that way.

I think Atheism, although Im not, makes a stronger person. Instead of praying to a god askign for help and forgiveness, you rely on yourself to become a better person. You have to forgive yourself for what you have done, and I think if you have any conscious [sp] at all, you will strive to become a better person, in turn, you live a better life.

In turn making them weak. Taking the easy way out is like giving up, not believing in yourself. That you on your own can make it. So they turn to religion to get some sort of re-assurance that they are strong. But they know in there mind they are weak, some choose to admit it, and others dont.

Try God? Atheists don't need to "try God". That's the point: most atheists have "tried God", and they see that turning inwards is far more effective.

Wassup, give it a rest. I'm atheist and when something happens to me I workout until I can't move and focus on my exhaustion rather than sadness, sadness doesn't do anything for you so why bother with it.

This thread is about who Atheiests can turn to during sad times. Read the first post, it lists several times where one might feel sad and alone.

Edit: I disagree, religion should not be all about happiness. Happiness should be important but you can't run around with your head up your ***, turning a blind eye to all the suffering and what not in the world.
