Why is God referred to as a male?

Very often, members of this board refer to God as "him", "he", and etc; I always wondered why this was so? If God is a supreme force, then why is God classified as a male? I know some religions such as Christianity believe that God created us in its own image, but is it not disrespectful to refer to God as a mere human? And if not, then why do we assume God is a male? The bible refers to God as a he, but who are we to assume we, as humans, understand anything about God? Even more so, what gender this force we will never completely understand is?

Humans wrote the Bible, and at that time, males were dominate in the household. I think that since God is a supreme being, they thought of him as a male, and it just caught on.

Because the literal phrases for God back in the day referred to God in a fatherly fashion.

That's my dumbed down version.

The stories of the Israelites claiming the "promised land" seems to point to a war god personality, I guess warfare is more of a masculine thing compared to a fertility god.

That doesn't exactly prove why He's referred to as 'He.' That's more of just an instance of it. I see what you're getting at, though.

because they had to give him a "father figure" type of mental picture otherwise people would be thinking that god looked like a duckbilled platypus like in southpark

God is pure spirit, having no physical body and thus is neither male or female. But the Bible always refers to God using male pronouns and even Jesus called God his father. This is the main reason why we refer to God as a male or fatherly figure though He is so much more than that. He is the Creator of the world and transcends both male and female characteristics. God is pure spirit and is not bound by the physical realities that we as human beings are. God is both grace and law, compassion and justice, truth and light, and to put him in human terms when He really is above such things is not fully understanding who God is. And it is impossible for us as finite human beings to understand the infinite being of God. Thus we attribute human characteristics to God in order to grasp who He is. But they all fall short in some respects. But don't get too hung up on words or God being referred to as a male for he is neither male or female.

I don't know why some find it hard to believe that God is a he. We get this idea that oh...its not fair. Its not equal. God must be neither. Some things are just that way. Just cuz we don't quite get it doesn't mean its not true.

Biblically speaking, God made man first and from man made the woman. Man was created in God's image and later woman from man. This doesn't mean women are inferior or anything so don't make that up. There's equality. It just means that man was made in God's image first. Male.

But Bill, do you think God the Father has a physical body? I mean, we know God the Son did and he was male but I always understood God the Father and God the Holy Spirit to be pure spirit, without a physical body.

Edit: I always understood us being made in God's image and likeness as having nothing to do necessarily with physical attributes but more spiritual attributes with the ability to think, love, know and serve the Lord and that we were given the ability to freely choose to do so. Of course I have no problem with God the Father being thought of as a "he" or male but I just think he transcends that description. Not to make Him more politically correct or to put a feminist spin on things because I definitelty do not agree with that at all, but just because that is His nature and it goes above mere human descriptions.

Its a good thing to look up. I'll have to research it more. That's one area that I haven't really studied deeply. Now I have something to do today.

I understand spiritual bodies. Totally. I was more referring to the politically correct wave that says God is neither or what-not. Even today in prophetic type messages I hear him, he, father, etc. Something to study I guess.
