Has anyone UL framed an excal?

...sorry for the misleading title, I wanted to catch you all a bit off guard. I happen to have UL framed my excal (among other things). I was going to wait till this was completely finished (mill/ano/assembled) but I obviously couldn't wait that long. I give you my Custom swirl featherlite fsp UL framed excal in its current state: Unfinished

Full specs:
  • 03' but notice the placement of the snatch grip
  • WAS 1.6 (interested in Pandora for rMod)
  • SCM III
  • DC volly
  • BP no rider
  • 2 liter
  • JMJ snatch (location location location)
  • Eyes- installed by Jared w/ custom eye covers (original mill was without eyes)
  • UL frame
  • Custom trigger done by me on a whim, I love it (looking to replicate it in white delrin to match the bolt)
  • White delrin lightning bolt - 2 oring (looking to purchase a white delrin bolt pin)

Wait list:
  • Ano- of which I'm keeping to myself untill it's finished
  • 'Robtown' balanced valve, when he gets time to do the 03' excal version
  • Replica of trigger in white delrin (need to find a sheet of the stuff)

I love the feel of the frame and trigger, not to mention it's light as hell for an 03' excal. As for all the milling and frame retro fit...

...well you get the idea.

*all work was done by me with an assortment of files, hack saw, vice, drill press, tap set, dremmel, and a variety of sand paper
*I have a thing for one off markers, especially when they're AKA. So do me a favor and don't copy my steeze
*The original serial was EXA739. The new serial will be #MP-1, which stands for what I'm going to call it, "Monty Python". The ano will justify the name

It's still a work in progress, as will be the case with this thread untill it's finished

That looks amazing, especially considering the tools you used...
Just for the record, you must either be a pro dremeler or insane.

I'd lean more towards a case of idle hands... I'm young and get all antsy in my pantsy when I've nothing to do around the house. I picked up the dremmel halfway into the bolt cut, I'd never used one before. It was used mostly for inside the tray, files and sandpaper pretty much owned the rest.

thanks for the support so far! I think I'm more excited to see it this complete than anybody.

I'm not a fan of FSP's but it looks good how you have the frame and FSP matching. Also, the cut midway in the top tub is insane......
I currently have a DM5 framed excal that is going to be milled before long....hopefully it will turn out as nice as yours.

.

you ruined that excal

i think the 'one of' approach should have some unwritten rules. mainly it needs to look good when you are done.
sorry but that bolt cut looks bad.

i mean i guess i could drill holes in the back tube or saw grooves into the side of my frame and call it a one of but man....

Agreed, not feeling the the bolt cut, it ruins the entire look of the gun for me. It doesn't flow at all.

Frame looks great with the FSP cut. But I also dislike the bolt tube cut. In fact, I hate all bolt tube cuts.

Sorry you guys feel that way, but in all fairness it's my gun and I dig it. I do agree that it doesn't flow with the lines of the Swirl but I had my mind set on a tube cut and one extreme enough to follow those lines just wasn't a viable option.

I think you'll change your minds once it's ano'd

I'll have pics of this in due time, I doubt anyone will want to do it the way I did. Basicly It's mounted with 4 screws (5 if you include the new placement of the snatch) tray to body then frame to tray. I ended up shaving back part of the tray towards the on/off switch (as well as the board mounts) to get the frame to line up with the fsp and snatch. I'm in the process of fashioning a "tray" out of a delrin/plastic material to fit in the actual tray, which holds the nuts in place (for the frame mount) and mounts the board. I made a mock 'UL board' out of plexi glass to mount the WAS micro switch and keep the 9v from bouncing around in the frame. I'll try and get pics of all this up when I have time/finish. The only really cool part about the fame mount is I didn't drill new holes in the fame and I'm using flat alen heads for a flush look. Other than that I feel like a ghetto rigged it. Don't worry, it's still a solid platform.

It would have been easier had I not been so picky on how the frame lined up on the body. I'm sure someone could find a better way of doing it on a non FSP'd vik/excal. I would like to see one on an 04'.

like, it's agg and no I can't take off the rest, the bolt pin needs a guide. Not to mention it keeps dirt out of the ram

I did it because no one has done it yet. If nothing else I think it's cool because it's unique.

/negativite feedback on the bolt cuts

I love the fact that you used hand tools for alot of the work. I also applaud you for sticking to what you like with the bolt cut. However, may I suggest that you work the back bolt tube radius to match what you created? It may give it a more completely look. Kinda reminds me of when something is just out of square, but can hardly notice it. But once you do...

But if you like it, then by all means send her off to ano!

Thanks for the support! and yes the radius' still need to be tweeked. The first and last cuts are the most simetrical, this was achieved with a half moon shaped file, but the middle cut is definatly off a bit as it was hand rounded with flat files. I'm not that close to sending it to ano, remember guys it's still mostly unfinished.

I may rework that cut due to all the negative feedback, though I'm not sure what I have in mind will be any more welcome than what I've done already

Ah hell, but if you like it then stick with it!

Besides, taking any more off would probably just make more people yell at you. I really think it could have turned out a lot worse, all things considered.

I for one kind of like the bolt tube cut. I think you should do a little more to the top tube though (maybe make another similar cut behind it) so that it looks better.
