BIG , but not that big

My buddy got back from iraq about 2 months ago, he saw many of them but they dont get to enormous sizes like the photo, they get to a size of about a dinner plate so maybe about 12" but they r fast, apparently they chase humvees ( trying to stay in their shade). Usually they are target practice

some quotes from the wikipedia article on them:

"Solifugae are the subject of many myths and exaggerations about their size, speed, behavior, appetite, and lethality. They are not especially large, the biggest having a legspan of perhaps 12 cm, and although they are fast on land compared to other invertebrates, the fastest can run perhaps 10 miles per hour (16 km/h), a quick jogging pace for a human. Members of this order of Arachnida apparently have no venom, with the possible exception of one species in India (see below) and do not spin webs.
In the Middle East, it was once rumored among American and coalition military forces stationed there that Solifugae will feed on living human flesh. The story goes that the creature will inject some anaesthetizing venom into the exposed skin of its sleeping victim, then feed voraciously, leaving the victim to awaken with a gaping wound. Solifugae, however, do not produce such an anaesthetic, and they do not attack prey larger than themselves unless threatened. Other stories include tales of them leaping into the air, disemboweling camels, hissing, screaming, and running alongside humvees; all of these tales are false, apparently told to new recruits in order to frighten them, to the amusement of the veterans.
Due to their bizarre appearance many people are startled or even afraid of them. However, the greatest threat they pose to humans is their bite in self-defense when one tries to handle them. There is no chance of death directly caused by the bite, but, due to the strong muscles of their chelicerae, they can produce a proportionately large, ragged wound which is prone to infection."

Definately fake. It'd be pretty funny to watch someone get run down by one of those though, LOL! (as long as it wasn't me)

Here is a better quality picture of the one shown on that website. As you can see, they aren't really that big.

Some more info:

Some common Camel Spider Myths:
1. Camel spiders can move at speeds over 30 MPH, screaming while they run.
2. Camel spiders can be as large as a frisbee.
3. Camel spiders venom is an anesthetic that numbs their prey.
4. Camel spiders can jump three feet high.
5. Camel spiders get there name because they eat the stomachs of camels.

THE FACTS
1. Camel spiders top speed - 10 mph.
2. Size: Up to 6 inches
3. They have no venom.
4. They don't jump.
5. Called camel spiders because they live in the desert.

They actually aren't spiders at all, they're solpugids.. Along with spiders, they are members of the class Arachnida.

Still scary as hell. Any spider is scary for me, and I must be rid of it in some way.
