When is war just?

Quote:
Causes of war

The causes of war are many and varied. Some of the more common or notable situations which prompt war are:

* When there are no other perceived options for resolving differences or grievances.
* In the face of a perceived immediate threat from an aggressor.
* When one party desires something another has.
* In the case of an immediate need to secure essential resources for survival, such as food, water or shelter.
* When areas of a country (such as provinces, states, and colonies) desire independence from that country.
* As the result of a long standing hatred between nations that has built up over a number of years (rivalry or other antagonisms).
* When belief in one nation's or race's superiority over others prompts that group to cast aside people it sees as inferior.
* As a result of antagonism caused by different interpretations of some religion among different parties.
* As a result of Ideological differences between different parties. For example, Nazism's hatred of Communism contributed to the outbreak of war between Germany and the Soviet Union during the Second World War. The Sino-Soviet Split nearly became an armed conflict between the Soviet Union and China over the goals of Communism.
* When some party wishes to pursue global domination.

War is only just when it is being used to stop injustice.

(Yes it is uber vague and a bit cliche, but I more or less feel that way)

I forgot which General said it during the pacific campaign, but when he was asked what's the point of war he answered with, "The point of war is to kill as many of those bastards as you can until they stop fighting."

It seems though, that recently the action of war has never destroyed the problem that was the original intention to take on. For instance, WW1, destroy military agression by certain powers. WW2, destroy military agression by many of those same powers. Korea, destroy military agression of some of those proxies of powers. Vietnam, destroy agression by proxies of above powers. And so forth.

So, can the cause of the war be destroyed, perhaps greed causing agression?

According to the Catholic Church...

Quote:
2309 The strict conditions for legitimate defense by military force require rigorous consideration. The gravity of such a decision makes it subject to rigorous conditions of moral legitimacy. At one and the same time:

- the damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation or community of nations must be lasting, grave, and certain;

- all other means of putting an end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective;

- there must be serious prospects of success;

- the use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated. The power of modem means of destruction weighs very heavily in evaluating this condition.
That's from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and is part of the just war doctrine. Even if youre not a christian I think it still applies.

Even if you are fighting a force though and if you don't destroy it but let the idea migrate to arise again then have you won?

The only time I feel a war is just is when you are trying to fight to get your personal liberties back. I am not sure if I think fighting for other's liberties is correct.

War is never entirely just. War is merely a way to TRY and achieve peace once words have failed, or never attempted in the first place.

But, if your looking at it in an imperial fashion then I would disagree.

Isn't it buddhist beliefs that say without jealousy there would be no wars?

Really? I would think an Imperialist would justify their wars with relative ease. If war was thought unjust by those who started it, there would be no wars to speak of.

Well how do you determine an imperialistic war is just?
