10 steps to maintain your Detonator
Recently the Promaster forum has become fascinated by the low price and outstanding preformance of the detonator. For good reason at that, it is a great product no doubt. However, it is unlike other regs and can be daunting to take apart. I have gotten several questions both here and on AIM about how to lube and maintain the reg, so I figured I'd post up for everyone to see:
What you need:
Detonator (Obviously)
Lube (I am using Pus, aka dow33. You can use whatever is suitable for a reg.)
Cotton swabs (not shown)
C-clip wrench
Rag
Pencil
3/32 allen key
5/64 allen key
Step I:
~Remove the bottom part and adjuster ring by unscrewing the 3/32 grub screws and unscrewing/pulling them off.
Step II:
~Use the 5/64 allen key to remove the grub screw under the adjustment ring. Then remove the brass internals by sliding them out.
Step III:
~Unscrew the brass internals. A 3rd brass part should easily fall out. An oring and cupseal may also come out, make sure not to lose these. Mind did not come out, so they are not shown.
Step IV:
~Take the C-clip wrench and (who'd have guessed it?) remove the c-clip from the top.
Step V:
~Push the piston and spring out of the top of the regulator by sticking a pencil through the bottom.
Step VI:
~Clean everything using the rag and cotton swabs.

Ewww:
Step VII:
~Put the internals back together, make sure that it all goes in the right way.
Step VIII:
~Put the bottom half back together. Just slide the brass internals back in, and screw the holder on so it will still swivel, but not slide back out. Then screw on the adjuster ring, all the way. This will set the reg to ~100psi, you can tune it later. Remember to attach the bottom portion too, and don't forget to clamp the adjuster ring down.
Step IX:
~Lube the plunger. Make sure to get the stem covered in a thin coat of lube too.
Step X:
~Put the spring and plunger back in. Now put the c-clip back in. Congrats you are done!
For reference:
If you screw up and break something, blame Jesus. Or yourself, whoever, as long as it isn't me.

nice thread. most people think dets are a pain because they dont have the c-clip tools. my friend put a det on his BKO and i used the gun a lot, and i love the reg(plus it's evil, a company where expired or voided warranties dont matter, theyll replace and fix it anyway.)

EDIT: nevermind, this didnt help me at all......my bottom swivel piece does not have a set screw, and the bottom/collar dont come apart......but the top part of the brace piece can screw out, and the whole top half is the same

Can you use anything else besides a C-Clip wrench?

You could possibly get it done with picks or really small screwdrivers.

Just go buy some snap ring pliers.....that aren't that expensive for a cheap pair.
Good tip from the Evil Omen FAQ...paraphrased
ALso, be very careful when reinstalling the the two halves that you make sure you see the retainer flange go past the retaining screw hole. Also, that retainer and housing is brass, so you don't need to be superman when installing the retaining screw. Just don't bottom out that screw, just install it until it is flush so the adjuster ring can go over it.

there are at least 2 different revisions of the detinator from evil, i have both and have noticed the 1 less grubb screw and the fact the top of the plunger just below the c-clip is designed differently, i dont know if this was to fix a creep/eff issue or just to make it work better altogether, never have figured out which is the newer revision but I get the same results over the chrono from both regs.
I just wish they looked better on my FSP.....
edit: aha i found my pic of my 2 pistons, anyone here know off hand which is the "newer" revision and what the change was made for? Im thinkin the one on the left is the older version, but dont know what it does, as it obviously changes the oring position as well as the piston shape.

i only got em a couple months apart from each other and they were both from pbgear when they were on one of their sales for 40 back during the first price drop. Have used em on a gen2 FS, FSP and an ion and it they have worked great on all 3 and I honestly havent noticed any performance difference between the 2 pistons.
and yes I agree the one on the right is the newer one, maybe it was just for less moving mass or something.

wow, i know its an old *** thread, but i tried taking my detonator apart and it didn't really work. i can't pull the bottom parts off of the brass, i think they're glued there and i can't think of a good way to un- glue them.
