I need to get a laptop for college and know absolutely nothing about computers...I just want it to have enough memory for my music and pictures, and it needs to be a dell because I can get a good discount on them. If anyone has any ideas, that'd be great...because I'm terribly lost and don't want to get something too crappy or too high of quality for what I need it for.
edit: Actually, could someone just tell me if the Dell Studio 15 seems like it'd be alright? This is the one I'm thinking about.

Hey, I was wondering if you guys could help me out with this problem I have. I have a Sony Vaio ( link here for specs) and it's not that fast as of now. It gets simple tasks done, but it's not that great when it comes to making it do what I want.
What can I possibly do to make it faster with the most efficient use of money?
I need to edit AVCHD video without having it crash/slowing down too much.
I also realize it has an i3 core processor. Is there any possibility of buying an i7 and installing it myself?

Definitely you need to buy a Dell E6410 series laptop. You will love the business design, because is built to last, and as well the 3year warranty!
It has mate screen witch is a joy when you get the laptop outdoors, and you can fit it an extended battery.
Glossy, shinny laptops are IMHO just for desktop replacement because you can look at them only when is dark in the room.
+1 for dell. Be smart!

There aren't many sites/companies that allow you to select parts and build your own laptop. I suppose you could look into Alienware, which is basically Dell, now that they have been bought out. I would usually be against it, and still am when it comes to their ****ty desktops, but laptop quality wise, they have surprisingly stepped up their game. IF YOU REALLY want to pick parts and have it custom built, then Alienware is the only thing that comes to mind. Otherwise just find something nice from Newegg, I doubt you will have to upgrade it anytime soon if its just for movies/general entertainment.

Not sure if there is a better thread to ask this, but my friend just deleted everything (items in there by accident) in his recycling bin on his MacBook Pro by accident. lol
Is there any secret way to restore it? I'm consulting Google as well, but wanted to post here to see if anyone had previous experience with this.

Andy, I'd ask in the "Everything Apple thread".

Alright peeps...I'm looking for a laptop for college. Nothing too fancy...Around the 500$ range..600$ max. Just for basic word processing, internet surfing, etc...Though a cam on it would be nice as well.
What are your suggestions?

1. refurbished white Macbook ($500 from Microcenter)
2. Latitude E6400 (~$250 from ebay)
3. $500 HP or Dell from Best Buy
I recommend the MB and Latitude first (depending on whether or not you like OS X) because both retailed for over $1000 when new. Macs get hated on here, but for a college student it's a really nice cohesive package with OS X Lion. The only thing it's really missing are the newer multi-touch gestures, but I hardly think that's worth $600 for a brand new Macbook. The Latitude doesn't have a camera, but it's dirt cheap and ridiculously well-built.
New consumer-level laptops (especially in that price range) are built to price, meaning that build quality and manufacturing are generally subpar. Chances are your Macbook or Latitude will outlast whatever cheap laptop you get from Best Buy/Staples.

looking at getting this. what do you think. im going into the marines, not school or anything, so this is mostly a toy and not a tool.
literally my only requirement is a camera for video chats, which i know that pretty much all laptops have anymore, but i am a bit of a gamer, which is why im leaning towards the AMD A10 part of it.
not much of a computer guy. i know what RAM is and basic **** but not much about processors and whatnot. I also dont want to throw money at it in upgrades really, which in reading some of this thread is something i've noticed you guys like to say.
thanks for any help.

Could use some help from anyone more laptop knowledgeable than I am.
Only reason I'm getting a new laptop is for my attempt at mobile PC repair. I have a laptop, but it's ancient and I can barely tolerate using it anymore.
What I need:
I'm just running various antivirus, diagnostic programs. Combofix, Malwarebytes pro, other good programs I need to test the customers computer/hard drive. I want at least 4 hours battery life. Nothing larger than 15.6". Could weigh 10 lbs for all I care. Doesn't run too hot preferably. At least a low end i3 dual core or AMD equivalent. 4gb or more of ram. Any traditional hard drive, I already have a OCZ SSD I might put in it, two hard drive spaces if within my budget. Just want to browse internet and maybe watch HD videos. That's all for entertainment purposes, not gaming on this. No HP laptops unless you can convince me otherwise.
Budget: $600 and under.
