EGO QEV - Teardown and Clean Guide

THIS IS A DELICATE PROCESS. The QEV is held on by loctite with relatively thin threads, and it is also loctited together. If you are not 100% confident to proceed, please support your local proshop and bring it to them instead.

Taking the QEVs off the rammer housing is pretty straight foward. Use pliers and pull off the hoses. (when pulling hoses off, pull straight back and away from the barb, NOT at an angle) Unscrew the QEVs off using a small adjustable wrench and they're out.

Before you attempting to take apart your QEV, make sure you have the proper tools. I can not stress enough how the right tools will make your life a lot easier.

Tools Needed:
Pliers, preferably with curved jaws
Adjustable Wrench, small is good
Small allen key (.050) or thing paper clip
Pick (optional)

First, grip the shoulder of the barbed end, making sure the jaws are not gripping on the QEV body. Make sure you got a firm grip on it and its ok to have the teeth bite down a bit on it. You can also use a mini-vise for this part but I prefer pliers since you can feel the amount of pressure better.

The scratches in this pic are kind of exaggerated. This particular QEV has been taken apart about five times.

While gripping down on the shoulder, use an adjustable wrench and turn the body couterclockwise (left). It is usually loctited down but if your tools are doing its job, it will turn off pretty easily. Its ok if you nicked the shoulder a little bit, ..sometimes its inevitable. As long as you don't crush the thing, you're good. Firm grip, not death grip.

Remember the orientation of the diaphram (black peice). Safest route to remove the diaphram is by pushing a thin allen key or paper clip through the barb on the other end. Using a pick might risk damaging it.

Just clean it all up. Remove any debris inside the body, diaphram, and barb end cap. Unless you need to replace the oring on the non barbed end cap, you do not have to remove it. Inspect the diaphram for any tears or damage. I don't think PE sells the diaphram by itself so if its torn or shredded, you may have to buy an entirely new QEV.

If you suspect a leak from the orings itself, replace with "5 x 1mm" orings.

Reassyembly:
Lightly coat the diaphram with oil and place it (cupped side in) into the QEV body. The small nub in the center of the diaphram should fit into the hole inside the body. (note the blue lines)

Finger tighten the peices back toqether first, then tighten with wrench. You can use BLUE loctite if you like but use only VERY little. DO NOT drench the threads with it. While tightening the end back on, be very careful not to overtighten it. There should be a slight gap, oring half visible.. that is normal. If you overtighten to a point where there is no gap, you can risk crushing the diaphram or limiting the motion of it.

When installing QEV back on to the rammer housing, make sure you put a light dab of blue loctite on the threads to ensure a good seal. I would recommend puttng the hoses back while the loctite is still wet. This will allow time for any fitting adjustments before the loctite sets. DO NOT USE RED LOCTITE! Good luck

Maybe 420 can just link this to his ultimate or something so it doesn't clutter things up.

Getting them off the rammer housing is the easy part... I don't have to go into that do I? lol

Will be added in to the Ultimate Sticky soon.. this is a very delicate process and really be a last resort for most people... Maybe that should be bolded and underlined on top?

True, this is really for last resort or if you can't get replacement QEVs on time. I'll make a note of that in bold.
