Considering an ETEK 5 or LV1

Happy Friday!

I am a brand new paintball player. I have been really liking the sport and the community. I have been browsing PBNation for a while and really love the information and community.

I have done some research on what markers to buy and narrowed it down to the ETEK 5 or LV1.

I have found some information comparing the two different models. Generally a lot of people consider the ETEK 5 to have similar functions and features at the LV1.

My question as I am rather new and don't quite understanding paintball features and such all that well yet is, Is the LV1 worth the extra $500 new that an ETEK 5 for a new player like myself?

I like playing and easily play twice a week. I am not looking to join in pro-teams in the future, I just want a gun that can compete with other players, a gun that I can feel confident in knowing it will always work, and a gun that I enjoy shooting.

If I got an ETEK 5 I would upgrade and get the OLED board as well, as I feel I would like that display and feature.

Of course if you have other suggestions similar to those markers that meets my needed, I am all for suggestions.

Thanks!

For a new player such as yourself, just go with the Etek 5. Great peformance and the same ergonomics as the Lv1, and you can still save hundreds even after upgrading to the OLED module. With the rest you save you could get a full kit to be able to play paintball (loader, tank, mask, etc.) and still end up spending less than just the LV1. Etek 5 is more than enough, and if you decided later on you want to invest more money in paintball you can think about "upgrading" to the LV1 or future Ego lineup.

It might also be advantageous to look through the Buy/Sell/Trade section to see if you can find a used Etek 5, LV1, or later model Ego (11, 10, etc.) for a good price. But if you're set on buying new, then definitely get the Etek.

Take the Etek5, use that $500 you saved to get the rest of your gear and play paintball. The platform is tried and true tech from PE and you won't waste time tuning your solenoids every week =P

I've played paintball for many years and the Etek5 has been super reliable. 10 years ago it was easy to say someone shooting an Angel might have had an advantage over someone shooting an Autococker, but today the practical differences between high-end and mid-range markers isn't clear. They're all going to shoot the same ROF wise, it's up to the player to make things happen.

I just got back into paintball 3 months ago. Shot the right feed autocockers so I bought a 2002 autococker which I still have but not to long after going my first time again quickly I realized I needed to up the performance to get back into to tourney's. So I researched allot of different guns. Allot of people currently have axe pro's at least at the 400-600 gun price range. Etek 5 just came out and after reading allot of reviews and checking out videos on the gun I opted to go straight for that. Just like everyone else said too. With the money I saved from switching to geico I spent that money on slider shorts, virtue loader, 45 and 68 cu in carbon fiber compressed air tanks, pants, jersey, knee pads, hk KLR mask, eclipse elbo pads, 14" and 10" carbon fiber freak barrels, head band, hk pod pack, big size duffle bag from eclipse, and cleats. LOL! You get the idea anyhow. I got mid to top level upgrades, gear, and all the proper attire just because I didn't go for the 1300-1800 gun.

Is the OLED board absolutely necessary?

Not necessary at all but they are a pleasure to use and for the etek here it is priced great really, so to most adding that in is almost a no brainer

i'm not nearly as experienced as others here, but i recently did the whole comparison shopping thing so i'll just toss in my .02

get a used ego11. the POPS asa alone is worth it.
get a used rotor.

take the rest of your money and get a space helmet mask and pimp a** tank.

So a used ego11 is still preferred over a new etek5?

No.

I would take an 11 over any other etek and any pre lv1 prior ego, but the etek 5 I would shoot over an 11. Can get new for similar price as a used 11, pops is nice but come on folks, it's an asa and the oops is fine and the shot quality and ergonomics of the etek5 is stellar.

I personally would take an etek5 over any ego but the lv1, and while the lv1 is noticeably better, it isn't by as much as you might think.

My brother just picked up an ETEK 5 w/ OLED this past weekend and I must say this gun is very impressive for the price range. It doesn't shoot as nice as my Geo obviously but for about 500 dollars less, the gun is legit. Feels nice in the hands as well

The LV1 is a great marker but for someone just starting and needing other gear, you can have a top-level loader, mask and tank along with an ETek 5 for the price of an LV1. I own an LV1, along with many other markers and I've shot an Etek 5. It's a great gun, you won't be disappointed.

You can get an Etek 5 brand new for 550(new) and LV1 for 800(used). If i were to suggest someone new.

Pick up the Etek 5, and use that extra $250 and spend it on getting decent gear. Like a 50/45 or 68/45 tank, for $100 bucks on the BST. And a decent mask/hopper from BST, lots of rotors v2 or v3 or sale..

If you think purchasing a Etek 5 you want oled and all that, just pick up a LV1 used.

I have shot a friends old ego 11 and the ETEK 5
The ETEK 5 is much smoother and quieter (likely more efficient as well)
Also the rubber LV1 style ergonomics are much more comfortable than ego 11

A great third option would be the new Shocker RSX. It falls right in between the two price-wise, already has the OLED board, comes ready for Freak barrel inserts, and has one of the nicest shots in paintball.

I typically wouldn't suggest anything else since we are in the PE forum, but since you had asked, and we are still in the same price range, I thought it was worth consideration.

I snagged a lnib Etek 5 with Oled for $450. Gun still had the stickers on it and absolutely no breech wear.

The deals are out there.

Get the 5. It will handle everything you want to do and if you decide to join a team for fun it will still perform especially if you get a different barrel.

I an LV1and it is awesome but it will be the last electronic marker I buy for many years to come.

If ur a new player cross that LV1 off the list. Spending that much on a pro gun is crazy if ur just getting into paintball. Etek 5 will be just fine although the LV1 is definitely smoother.

It's quiet because it's in the gear bag waiting to be cleaned and lubed after every round.

LV1 just shoots ropes all year long with 1 drop of oil.

But to the question in hand:

Etek 5 should serve you very well.
All the time you spend in the field it won't let you down and you've saved tons of money for training and doing more the thing you love: Play paintball! <3

I am thinking of upgrading my 09 ego to a etek 5. Shot a 5 a while back and can't wait to get one.
