New and improved?

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I've added another webserver to our server pool.

Basically what this means is, when your computer tries to resolve www.pbnation.com, its going to resolve to one of two ip addresses, and point you to one of the two webservers in the pool.

This is the first time I've done anything like this, so it may or may not work, we're just going to have to wait and see.

This *should* improve the slowdowns we've been starting to see at peak usage (>400 users). The machine I had just running web and mail was starting to get bogged down, so I'm trying to offset some more of the load.

Let me know how it works out for you guys!

The loading of pages seems to be running faster now, and the Post reply page just loaded much faster than normal.

Otherwise the forum loads a bit faster.

looks a sessionID problem. You might've bounced over to the other server after the post for some reason, where it did not have your session information.

Ahh yes, thanks for the input guys.

The max connections thing i fixed earlier, you may encounter some connection refused msgs here and there as i un-break/restart things. I had the db set at 500 max user connections which we reached like nothing (which is unheard of, we usually NEVER do over 350-400 connections).

The session problem is something I have yet to figure out.

Basically, if you are browsing as a guest, or not using cookies on your user account, and you happen to jump over to the other server (which really shouldnt happen unless your dns cache expires while browsing the site??), it might say you aren't logged in.

The fix is to a) login b) ensure that you are using cookies in your user profile.

I'm not sure theres a way to share session data across servers.. but i may be wrong.

I had been reluctant to start up another webserver w/o a proper load balancing solution (round robin dns is the poor mans load balancing), but those switches cost some big $$$ (an 8 port foundry serverironxl is like 8 grand retail).

overcast, I havn't looked into load distribution on apache yet, i'd really only considered hardware solutions for the problem, not software stuff, but I will have to read up a bit.

one thing i found interested, is that once we started hitting crunchtime, our db queries/second DOUBLED. It will be interested to see what our webstats are like tonight..

this is too whacked, it keeps saying i'm not logged in now....sometimes when i post or edit stuff it doesn't show up until later... weird. also, to post in this forum i had to spoof the URL http://www.pbnation.com/newreply.php...hreadid=160461 to get this comment in because it didn't show the POST REPLY links anywhere. drop the new server and please figure out whats up. something bad is happening, hope you have a backup.

Well ditangquan,

I appreciate your bug report, but I'm not about to "turn it off" based on one report, I need some more information.

Are you sure you are using cookies and not sessions?

As for replies not showing up, it could have something to do with a db backlog, which I'll look into.

If its consistantly a problem for you, try going to the site via www1.pbnation.com.

i have noticed a few pics only loading 1/4 of the way. getting email notification that someone has replied to a specific thread, but doesn't appear on top.threads dis-appearing and re-appearing after replied too.pbn actually locking up my laptop. deleting/editing post not working at times.

hope it doesn't sound like i am nagging, just wanted to point out a few problems i had yesterday. might sound like i have alot of time on my hand since i encountered a few problems. but i am on pbn off and on for 15 hours a day. i was fired from my job and just being lazy right now and spend my time on here looking at pics and post that other players have started.

i'll continue to live on here and post any other problems that may occure and have not yet been discovered.

well yesterday there was going to be some weirdness as i restarted one of the webservers about 20 times, the database 3 times etc.. all of which could be the cause of the problems.

the second webserver was also not sending out email notifications for about 8 hours which i didn't realize till about 1am this morning.

give it a couple days and i'll try not to tinker as much and we can see how things work out.

Is this happening to anybody else?

I post a message, and then when I check to see if it's there it's not, but when I search I can find it?

Well if theres gonna be like a expensive hardware or software upgrade needed to fix some problems, I'm gonna donate some money. I kept forgetting about it, and then forgetting to get the pay pal account info from my dad.
