You need a torrent downloader like BitTorrent or Azureus. The ".torrent" file isn't the actual file that you want. Think of it like a ticket, or voucher, that you have to use toactually get the file that you want. Google it for more info. I really don't feel like explaining it in full detail.

Kustoms analog actually is prety precise.

.torrent is like a "what line to get me in" file. Your .torrent file is opened by whatever torrent progarm (i use azureus) and it knows what tracker to get you into to find who else has/wants that same file and uses P2P technology to basically pull bits and pieces from those people til you have the whole things.

Using a web browser such as Firefox, users navigate to the site listing the torrent, download it, and open it in a BitTorrent client. After opening the torrent, the BitTorrent client connects to the tracker, which provides it with a list of clients currently downloading the file or files.
