To answer your question, I don't think it's required, but a strap wrench is the way to go and a good investment.
When I used thick rubber, it still left 3 very small scratches on the reg and I said to hell with it. I found an ice bag and that worked well.

When you bring all the pieces together. Im not to clear on one thing. Im to clean all the shim's (9). When it's coming together, are we putting lube on the shim's or leave them clean ? Are we to only grease/lube all the area's were there is a o-ring ??? One other question on grease/lube, DOW33, DYE lube, etc. There is so many to choose from. I read you can use this here but not here ... I have my REG apart but need a little help

Dow33 is fine. There was a pretty good thread on inconsistancy and Hawk from MO had some pretty good info:

If you are going to take your regs apart and relube them (don't see why on a new reg, but that is your choice) use something that is a little thinner, like a "wet" coat of dow33 or Motion potion from Toxic. and remember a little goes a long way.
In fact... there is good info on this thread from where Hawk first posted on down. It also has info on the shims:

Hope this helps

Nope- both the same regs.
Stack the shims according to the picture in the sticky.

^^^ try heating the bottom part up with a blow dryer (heatgun is better)... then use a strap wrench and allen wrench to get it off.
