I spent that day driving home from a trip to Louisiana that crossed a good chunk of Tx. With a 4 month old baby you make a lot of stops and I didn't see any closed businesses. I did see a lot of Hispanic people working. No way to tell if they were legal, illegal, or citizens. I didn't notice any big effect other than an inordinate amount of media coverage. I see a surge coming if Mexico goes ahead and legalizes drugs as they are planning to do.

All I can tell them is "Si usted habas inglés no habría un problema" which is really bad Spanish for "if you spoke English there would not be this problem."

The best is when you have the 4 year old kid translate for their parents. Its hilarious to hear the kid try and translate "do you have any significant medical history?" or "are you taking any persciption medication?"

Yeah Dread, I feel you. And I bet your liability doesn't change if they give you an answer in response to a question they thought they understood and you give meds that cause a bad reaction. It gets even more irritating when you know the fellow speaks english just fine but can play the no-speaky card when they don't feel like cooperating. One of the things that frustrates a lot of Tx officers into calling a ride for a drunk hispanic is when they can't administer any tests because the drunk refuses to understand the instructions. I have had them tell my interpreter that they understand just fine but were having fun with me at my expense. I am learning spanish just to be able to lock as many of them up as possible. You'd be amazed at what they will say in spanish right in front of you if they think you don't know spanish.

Wait..., they were protesting by not working? I didn't even notice.

Considering I live in Phoenix, I don't think it worked.

I read in the local paper here that they want to "harness their power" and do it again, but longer lol. The two most popular mexican restaraunts in the city i live in are now being boycotted for taking part. One even made some lame excuse about renovations or something. One man said about it, "They had their boycott, now let's have ours" lol I support him all the way.

bottom line: this created NO positive media. now, being an immigrant to this land myself, I can't blame the illegals. Lifestyle here, especially the goal of middle class suburbia, is great and desireable. and they wanna make the dream real. unfortunately, they must do what my parents did: have some sort of job skills back home and actually benefit this society when they arrive.

They dont like it, they just want money. Someone sent me this in an Email.

How would it be if we went to Mexico illegally and waved the U.S. flag
around while demanding rights of Mexican citizens?
More than 36,000 students from throughout Los Angeles County, California
skipped classes and marched through streets and on various freeways Monday,
March 27, 2006, to protest an immigration bill being debated in Congress.
"We may be illegal immigrants, but we are human," Metropolitan High School
senior Melania Preciado said as she waved a Mexican flag. "We deserve the
same rights as everyone else, not be treated like criminals." What an
ironic statement.

If we all went to Mexico...would we be treated as humans?? (Think of all
your friends who have driven down to Mexico for a weekend trip and were
either thrown in jail for looking at the Mexican police the wrong way, or
were pulled over for no apparent reason and FORCED to pay off the Mexican
police in order NOT to be thrown in jail)...

1. Try driving around as a Gringo in Mexico with no liability insurance,
and have an accident.

2. Enter MEXICO illegally - never mind immigration quotas, visas,
international law, or any of that nonsense.

3. Once there, demand that the local government provide free medical care
for you and your entire family.

4. Demand bilingual nurses and doctors.

5. Demand free bilingual local government forms, bulletins, etc.

6. Speak only English at home and in public and insist that your children
do likewise.

7. Demand classes on American culture in the Mexican school system.

8. Demand a local Mexican driver’s license. This will afford other legal
rights and will go far to legitimize your unauthorized, illegal, presence
in Mexico.

9. Insist that local Mexican law enforcement teach English to all its
officers.

Good luck!

It will not happen in Mexico nor any other country in the world...except
right here in the United States... Land of those who want to take care of
everyone, except American Citizens!

These "student" protesters, haven't the slightest clue as to what the hell
is really going on. They just want an excuse to leave school. What a
disgrace to AMERICA, our country!

If you're going to waive a Mexican flag to support your heritage, fine...
Just make sure there is an American one next to it...the land that gives to
all of its immigrants, and you. IF Mexico is SOOOOO great - Why leave it
and come to America? Think about it! Mexico isn't giving their people what
they deserve, and that's why they want to be here in America. What is
Mexico really doing for its people, other than making them desparate to
leave? This is not about people coming to America...just come legally, so
the legal system, education, medical, housing, etc., can operate more
smoothly and fair for those who are citizens, and those who long to be.
thank you
this man speaks so much truth it hurts

I agree with some of the people on here, and I really hate the ghetto mexican they're just a disgrace to all the other mexicans in the US. I actually don't mind having them here working on the jobs that pay less because I mean it should help motivate americans to go to college and get a good education instead of being bums and dropping out of school. So I really think they are doing anything wrong for this country, but helping this country's economy and hopefully putting some presure on the kids wanting to drop out. But I also think they should make a bigger fence along the border too because even though a lot of the illegal immigrants are helping us we don't want that many more and have the US to be over populated. Oh and back to the topic yea a lot of buisnesses here in IN were hurt by it because there was a lot of americans protesing with the immigrants and some I guess were saying on their news that they were losing thousands of dollars because of it, but I hope they decide on what there going to do so they can move on to the other real problems in the US such as gas price, alternative fuels, and obesity. I also want to say something about obesity lol I mean a lot of people don't think its a problem, but if you look around theres a lot of over weight people because of all the bad food in the US such as fast food restuarants, pop, and all kinds of stuff.
