New Server Has Arrived!

After a long slow wait we finally have what is soon to be our database server for the site. In the following days Kyle will be installing the Operating System and configuring the server. Once it has been deemed suitable for installation Kyle will be taking the new server and putting it next to our current one at our Colocation in Rochester, NY.

Specs are as follows:
  • Dell Poweredge 2650
  • Dual 2.4GHz Xeon Intel Processors
  • 2 GB Ram
  • 4 x 18GB Ultra 160 Scsi HDDs (Raid 5)
  • Redundant Power Supplies
  • Dual onboard 10/100/1000bt Nics
  • Spiffy 2u rackmount complete w/ fancy pants LCD screen

More pictures can be found at: http://junglist.org/images/2002/dell/

On behalf of the staff of PbNation.com I would like to thank everyone who donated. Thanks to your generosity, we gathered over one thousand dollars in donations, all of which helped us afford this new server.

Wahoo! Just wanted to add that this thing is insanely fast, definately the fastest box I've ever had the pleasure of using.

For all you nerds out there, I'm able to compile openssh in 16 seconds, openssl in 48 seconds, and the 2.4.20-rc1 kernel (tuned to my specifications) in ~ 1.5 minutes.

OPENSSH and OPENSSL I assume are security features, and 2.4.20 rc-1 kernel is most likely Linux.

BTW, I'm glad you guys are steering away from the whole Microsoft and MS Server thing.

And no, I'm not a nerd .

I sent you an email. Although the money donated will not go towards the server anymore, it will still be helpful for further advancement of the site.

I am glad I could help (a measely 10 dollars is better than nothing I guess) towards getting the new server. Do you guys have an approximation of when the new server will be being utilizied? Like a week or so? Also... Kyle: TREAT HER WELL!!

well im going out of town this weekend, but its possible the server could be up as early as next week sometime.. it all depends on our colo situation. we might be moving to a nicer location downtown which would slow down the migration a little bit but mean more reliability in the end..
