Powder Coat White vs. Ano White - Reference Thread

For reference purposes, side by side under plain ol' lightbulbs at home. 60 watt, without flash.

Powder coating white (top) as compared to Dusted clear anodizing (bottom)

Yes, I know clear anodizing looks more white when using a flash. Color tones in general are hugely effected by kind and quality of lightsource.

Same clear anodized piece, with flash, bright lighting.

That is awsome info. Great picture! I hope you don't mind if I add it to my reference pics... it's the only one I've ever seen that accurately demonstrates the REAL difference.

I see the link is broken in your post. Here, try mine:

I'll see what I can do for a side by side picture. I haven't had a chance to compare fresh clear in one hand to white powder in the other, only the pictures.

Agreed on durability, but for the price (or on cast or brass, steel, etc) its a darn fine finishing option, and tough enough for alot of applications.

Powder coat has it's merits, that's for sure. You can get some wild colors you would never get from ano. My only reservation with PC on PBguns is the machined screw holes, etc. A careful PC'er can certainly work around those constaints, though.
If you could get a side-by-side of white PC compared to dust clear ano, you would be a hero. I really think it's something that needs to be brought out.

Yeah, that's hella long.

Well this thread is making me have second thoughts about my anno i want to have done. Why does the anno look grey in these pics but I've seen lots of others that were annoed and look white?

Thanks for the reference

It would be easier to tell the difference if they were both white, but good comparison.

The top one is a body from a PT Junior (really old semi auto pistol that ran on 12 grams) its white powdercoated.

The bottom is a intimidator body anodized clear (anodizing's version of "white").

The picture is using no flash.

I get it, nice reference thread. I was hoping you would release this one after you did the other one of the 2 seperate pictures. It's always hard to tell with flash exactly how "white" the anno is, now you can obviously see the guns that are "White" just have a camera flash on them

Powder coating is definately NOT more durable than ano. Please know what you are talking about before posting.

Ano > Powdercoat.

Powder is tough, but its not "part of the metal" like anodizing is. As I've said a thousand times, its a great application for something that is VERY beat that you don't want to pay for prep on, or non-anodizeable surfaces. Its also got a couple different effects than you can't get out of anodizing.

Different animals, different uses, etc.

Im not very knowledgeable on the whole powder coating ordeal, it kind of looks like a regular paint compared to anodizing or is it just me? And no im not saying you used regular paint or calling you phony, but is that the effect u get with any color powdercoating?

A more paint-like appearance is defintely what you get with powder. It's also nowhere near as durable as ano. It's a lot thicker and kind of obscures the milling lines of the gun too. Not to mention it plays hell with tolerances and screw threading.

But on the plus side, you can get tons of cool effects out of powder that you just can't get with ano. I'd personally never consider powder for a paintball gun, but it does look cool on some of the guns I've seen with it... Just not for me.
