Any suggestions on what I can shoot for practice? Practice in shooting and editing would really help me.

i would say stay away from making dumb little home videos. if you're buying a camera of this caliber, i'm assuming that it's something you are considering pursuing in life. you want to shoot some location documentaries, no sound, little or no camera movement, no zoom, etc. just try to come up with nice composition and see what you can do. i made an awesome documentary about princeton, nj when i was using a pd-170. look online for some potential excercises, like working out shots and styles.

try to get an editing program cheap (or free ) for pc. pc's best choice would be adobe premiere, UNTIL you go very expensive, which you can't get for free, avid. if you have a mac, congratulations so do i, and final cut pro is the only way to go.

I've got Vegas 6 and DVD Architect, both by Sony as my editing programs. I think Final Cut is better.

the final cut studio is arguably the best editing software out on the market right now. the only software it competes with is avid, it blows any other software out of the water.

HOWEVER, final cut studio is mac based, and avid is very expensive and hard to "download". therefore, the obvious choice is premiere. adobe is a well backed company known for reliability in software, they know what they're doing. for entry-level all the way to some pros, premiere is the choice. don't waste your time with sony vegas, i've heard it's glitchy and is very annoying to work with.

A friend of mine recently gave me a copy of Final Cut express, and it's great. I really like it, but I'm still learning. I don't really plan on pursuing it as a career right now. I really enjoy it as a hobby. I'm going to college next fall to become a dentist. (Bio major). I will need new software next fall when I'm away at school for my PC, but I haven't thought about that yet.

My wheels should be selling tommorow to a friend of mine, and then I will most likely be buying a pd-150 off ebay.
Once I get it, I'm going to make an official video thread in this forum.

yeah.. it's my dad's. He loves macs. I only use that one for editing. I downloaded FC4 a year ago, and my ISP (comcast) sent me a letter in the mail saying it was illegal to download pirated software, and that I should delete it immediately. So I did.
