Vegas is a great piece of software, offering numerous effects, transitions, and encryptions. (WMA-MPEG II NTSC). Unlimited video and audio tracks as well. It is definatly worth the investment if you are considering going into the industy.
This man knows what he is talking about, Sony Vegas 5.0 w/ Photoshop is quite possibly the best editing softwear available IMO. I just purchased with the co-owner of my production company. Def worth the hefty cost. I also have DVD architect as well. Matt do you edit in HD?

I've tried to produce many products with EVEN pinnacle 10 (extension of Avid) and had multiple crashes/failures.

The only free editing programs are already on your system. that is either Windows movie maker (if you have windows xp) or I movie (on macs)

Cold,

I do not edit in HD, I plan on doing so in the future though. Right now however, I do not see reason to move to HD> In the next few years though...

I love vegas, everything I have used prior does not come near the capabilities of Vegas. I am in love with this program. From editing of DVDs, to TV Documentaries, I have had the best luck with this program. It was definetly worth the cost. I do have DVD Architect as well.

Pinnacle is a good starter program, but with only one (or two) video tracks and one (or two) audio tracks, (cant entirely remember how many) it was very limiting. And with my projects I cant afford to be limited by constraints.

I use Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, and Vegas. Sony Vegas, is definitely more user friendly then Adobe is. I like both though, I'll sometimes edit a video with one, then go to the other for another video.

I'm making a short 10 minute movie and I'm woundering what codec I should use to export it all. I've tried Xvid but wasn't too impressed about the picture quality. H.264 was better but the file size was a bit on the big side for a 10 minute movie.
I was looking at the HD 720p trailer of batman begins and I was amazed at the quality and filesize. What setting where used for those trailers?

PS: I'm a mac user.

Final Cut Pro has easily taken the film industry as a Pro Used Standard and taken the place of Adobe line of programs, Avid is a great program but a little harder to use, its a college level learning of editing, for those of you just getting into film and editing look into the lower package of final cut and work your way up, or if you dont want to spend any money then WMM should work just fine for your everyday paintball video, but when looking in editing as an independent film maker myself final cut pro is my first choice, adobe premire pro 1.5 following, 3rd being held strong by Avid.
Good luck in editing, (it's my least favorite step)
Peace

There is a FREE version out for AVID users called AVID Free DV. Just google it and you will find it. It has most of the basic fuctions of AVID. It has a great capture tool and allows for mutliple tracks of audio and video. I have learned AVID and it's a great program to compile and edit videos with. It may take a while to learn but the end benefit is amazing.
