JR-They use what they call "Velocity Envelopes". Just right-click on the video section you want to slo-mo, then scroll down to Velocity. From there a green line should appear on the clip. All you have to do is click-hold-drag the line to the percentage slower or faster you want.

What camera is a good buy for around 200 used? I'm getting into movie-making/editing, and I can't really decide. Some help would be appreciated. Thanks.

$200 is pretty low, but since it'll be your first, I would look into a Sony TRV140 and above, the TRV series are a great camera to begin with. I started with a TRV140 and all my videos before the Boston, and Socal one were shot with it.
http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=1705299
That video was shot with my old Sony TRV140. I shot it in 16:9 widescreen. If you need any help man, just IM me sometime (blacklabel2428) I'll try and answer any questions you have.

Slow motion in Vegas 6.
The way I make a clip slow is to put your mouse over the right edge of the video, hold the Control key, then drag the edge of the video to the right while holding down the left button. It works great. My vote for the best video editing software is Vegas. It also works great for recording bands and producing CD's. (You will need the rest of the suite.)

having read through this thread there has been a lot of poor information but there are a few people who have provided correct information.
AVID is the industry standard in production and editing.
Final Cut Studio HD is primarily used in post-production editing but is not the easiest to use.
Adobe Premier Pro 2.0 is a great product to use that has great capabilities for amateur film editors.
Sony Vegas 6 has relatively the same interface as Adobe and FCP, personally i prefer FCP or Adobe because they gave a better rendering algorithm.
Macromedia Director 8+ is a lesser know product but still works well for moderate editing .
I have seen Pinnacle 10+ but i wouldnt suggest it for anyone serious about going beyond the basic mix videos we see alot here.
The rest of the Adobe line (Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, etc ) are phenomenal editing tools when it comes to pics and special effects.
I just started using Combustion 4.0 and can say I am very impressed with its overall video capabilities, such as painting certain parts of film in color and the rest in black white - refer to the 300FPS intro, not a beginner program at all though.
For those wondering why the "artsy" people use Macs....when it comes to audio and video, the integrated Mac OS system has better color display, rendering, streaming playback, and compression capabilities that no PC-based operating system can match bar none (not Windows, Linux, etc).
Yes you can do everything a Mac does and more on a PC, but a MAc simply does it better.
I personally own a Mac Pro G5 with Final Cut Studio HD and AVID as my primary video editing
I also own a top of the line custom built PC and I use both AVID and Adobe Premier 2.0 for my primary editing.
In case anyone is questioning my credentials in the area, my professor and colleague whom I've been working with professionally for almost a year and a half now CREATED QUICKTIME, everything i know i learned from him personally.

kapp99- Where do you attend school?
On a side note, just finished an intro to a skate film promo, and it's amazing, I'll post it once I have it compressed. The 3 days I spent on it was worth it, even though it's only about 15 seconds.

You need to export and compress your video in .wmv format, then host your video on a website. I don't know what program you're using so I couldn't tell you how to compress your video in .wmv format.

So I recently started using adobe premeire pro 2.0, and I need help. After making and saving my movie, it came to a whopping 1.35 gb. How do I make it smaller? I need it to be less than 100 mb. Do I save it as something else? When I tried to save it as a .mov, it didn't work.

you need to change the quality settings when you export to video.

Great Font Page for Titles and Graphics
Hey All.
If you guys want to add that extra edge to your videos, check out this font site. These things will give your titles and graphics the extra boost to take your videos to the next level.

Not an endorsement, just a cool site for some great fonts.
