Jiu-Jitsu
Well, I've been looking at this martial art for quite some time and decided I'm very interested in taking it. I was wondering if there is any information you guys can give me, and also if there is any reason I should stay away from it?

Serious post:
Personally, I wouldnt take it because I cannot get into the whole grappling ground fighting thing. Obviously it is the most effective form of fighting, but if I was going to devote lots of time and energy to a martial art it would have to be something I enjoy. For that reason I would take something more strike oriented so I don't have to spend my time at the dojo with my legs wrapped around some sweaty guy...

I cant stand that crap...ok that was sarcasism.
I find it fun. Because it is the only martial art where you can go full contact on someone get them to the point where their or your arm is about to break, or you or them is about choked out. And then get done and still be friends. I have been taking bjj for alittle over 2 years now and there is nothing bad about it only the guy above me said. But then again he wants to punch and kick air.
Any idiot can throw a punch or a kick. May not be the most effective but you dont have to teach a child how to hit. But submissions, controlling your opponent on the ground, even striking (effectively) on the ground is soemthing that needs to be learned. I would rather roll around with a sweaty guy, and the get into a situation where I get in a fight or something knocked to the ground and be able to handle myself and feel comfortable. But take a striker who doesnt know anything on the ground and they are toast.
So here are my questions. Where are you from? What kind of information are you looking for?

I took judo for quite a few years and they're really closely related. There are some striking moves and a lot of grappling stuff. It's a good martial art to learn.

Go up to a local bookstore and check out the books that they have on the art. You will find a wealth of information, now you just need a willing subject to test it out on. Later, if you find that you really like it, I would think about classes. I personally would feel more confident teaching myself first before taking a class. Good luck!

Good for one on one. A combination of that and kickboxing would be pretty useful.

The best advice I can give you is to go sit in on a session. Don't listen to all the kids here who think they're UFC fighters. Go check out some different arts, sit through and watch some of them, and most places will even let you participate in a first class.

Would be excellent in your field of work.
Go for it I guess. I used to do martial arts as a kid and I personally didn't really enjoy it. The whole kata thing=
