Depends. If the mask is BNIB, then that may work, but if it's ever been used, the surface to be painted needs to be clean/degreased thoroughly. If it's smooth you may consider lightly ruffing it with a 'Scotch Bright' pad or maybe steel wool?

I may have posted these before but not sure. Anyway, here's some i3's I did ~yr ago and they have held up well. I airbrushed them with paint from a local hobby shop - with no flex agent in the paint. These are stock black i3 frames. I did a lite coat of white, then 2-3 lite coats of color allowing ~hr drying time for each coat 'cause it was cool weather. I only wear these every now and then and don't transport them in a gear bag. I've also never removed the lens since putting it in after painting them.

the mask in question is a used grill, but I just want to paint the non rubber part/. so Ill probably clean it really good with one of those green scrub pads then go to town with Krylon Fusion. Basically Im thinking of doing 2-3 layers of Krylon and 1-2 layers of clear coat. Or do I need primer?

Personally I would skip the clear coat. Unless you can get Krylon Fusion clear coat, then it's pointless to use Fusion for the base coat. The paint designed for plastics has a flex agent in it and standard paint doesn't.

As for primer, it depends on the color you're starting with and trying to get to. If you're going from a black Grill to a yellow, pink, lime, etc you may consider a lite 1st coat of white Fusion to get you started. The best results and longest lasting will be from 2-3 lite coats of paint total. The more paint you pile up the more likely it is to peel/crack.

Hmmm... Grill's are available in that color already, so I'd try to get one of them and save your time and mess. Just my $0.02.

Oklas405 - Not bad. Looks like you rushed it just a bit but I like the look

This is my lastest project. Not finished yet. Going to get new ears, white/black the ear jewels and put some stickers on the lens

You guys think these ears would match/look good?

canemaster - yeah I did sorta, the problem I had was if I left the tape on to long the paint would dry to the tape, so when I went to take it off the paint would go with it. So I had to touch it up with a brush and it looked crappy.

Decided to try this with a mask. Really rushed the tape job because I have zero creativity in what pattern I wanted. Sprayed it at about 3pm, and then reassembled the mask at about 6pm. Paint was dry to the touch and was really flexible so it didn't crack.

Will take my time on the next one now that I know it's not that hard. Didn't do any prep besides spraying rubbing alcohol on the plastic. Rustoleum Paint for Plastic

Bandana is attached along the bottom of the mask with velcro for quick on and off. Was getting tired of showing up to class with welts on my neck.
