Andy, are the chrome moly bottles the exempt from testing bottles you refer to? Is this the same for all chrome moly bottles? Safer? I know they're a lot heavier!!

They certainly are heavier, and that's because they're made of welded steel and not aluminum. Much stronger stuff. I trust them way more than aluminum co2 tanks, especially given the problems that tanks like the 20 oz PMI Pure Energy have with the pin valve unscrewing from the tank. It has happened twice in my presence in the last two years alone. That sort of thing is very dangerous when the tank is pressurized, as the bottle itself can become a small rocket. Thankfully we stepped in before anyone got hurt ...

Vancity - with most of the chromolly tanks that I own, the 2x2 rule doesn't apply. That seems to be more for 3.5 - 4 oz tanks and old 7 oz tanks, all aluminum. I recently heard that the DOT made that exception because airlines keep smaller tanks on hand in their emergency supplies, not because of any special properties of the tanks. Heh.

I worked at a field for a few years and had a valve unscrew on a freshly filled tank, scared the crap out of me. We had a guy at the same field had one fly off, it fortunately didn't hurt any one, but CRUSHED a few pro-lites on the armory wall.

I am really interested to find out if they're all exempt, it'd be a money saver in the long run.

One problem we had with chromoly tanks were the fact that they rust. After a year of filling and discharging, the tanks start to rust because they are made of steel.

It really doesn't matter what a GTF is. He is on a crazy sales pitch. When we first opened 6 years ago, all we could afford was the GT2000 (the predecessor of the GTF). We were constantly working on them. In cold weather, forget it. We rent the Model 98 now and don't regret it one bit. I've had some in service for 3-4 years now, and I'm just now having to replace the sear. Keep them fairly clean and oiled and they work.

We, PBC Sports Parks, have 2 locations and use 98's, A-5's, and Ions with 48/3000's. Compared to the Spyders, Piranhas, and GT2000's the Tippmanns hold up exceptionally well. We are having a little trouble with some of the Ions, but overall they are working pretty well. The A-5's and Ions are rental upgrades and cost $10 more to use them so the small increase in labor for them is covered.

Wow.....we have ordered over 200 tippmans in 3 years. It seems without a doubt that I am replacing the bolt every 6 months and the sear once a year. COuld it be the amount of rentals are different?? We use every gun at least once a weekend. How many guns do you have?? How often do you rent them??
FOr the above reasons we have gone to automags. In the 9 months that we have had them, I have had to replace 10 orings from leaks down the barrel.

Yep, I picked up on the sales pitch tone too. Also, there is no foregrip on those things. Add a bulky tank and no drop and you'd be looking at one very uncomfortable gun.

Keep in mind, the type of terrain at your field has a lot to do with it.

We had a lot of sand at our field which absolutely demoslished the guns. After switching the fields around so that not as much playing was done in the sand it made a considerable difference in the number of parts we had to replace and the amount of time we needed to clean guns.

We rent 98 Customs, and have about 200 of them.
