asking other owners what they pay taboo?

just curious if asking other field owners what they pay for paint is taboo or not. I'm curious to find out what paint they use, how much they pay, and how much they go through.

If a mod could clear this up, that'd be great.

there is no official rule, but it is not good for businesses to talk about that rule. I doubt you will get any field owner to tell you.

If you really want to know try privately contacting one of the many store/ field owners that frequently post in this forum or contact a paint distributer. Openly talking about it on this forum can be bad for business.

I have used Zap for two years now. And, asking what I pay for paint is like burping at the dinner table - both are very impolite. (grin).

We are BYOP. Our field paint is whatever retail paint that has been on the self over 3 weeks. We sell it at 10% below MAP, or at about 30% margin.

Our stores are 30 minutes from Action Village and Discount PB. Both are known to sell paint at retail for $2-$3 over cost. As such, field profitability is near impossible. If we promote FPO at MAP (42% margin), and they promote it near cost (8-12%), we're still considered expensive.

We've been considering ways to enhance value added services, but we're waiting for a few fields to go under.

In 2006 we'll be considering a BYOP membership for those who can prove their gear was bought from a true pro-shop. We're trying to reach out to those who see value in supporting retail outlets that support and invest the sport's future.

Can people get this membership if they purchase their gun from your e-commerce site?

j/k just had to mess with one of the few paintball business owners who seems to know what they are doing.

Haha. Our website is definitely not our preferred mechanism. Our long term goal for the web is to only allow our retail customers access to the website. We've been testing the waters now for 2 years in various ways online in order to finish our book on how to run a business. I can definitely tell you that the website is a net loss over the long run for us -- I just don't like dealing with the no-face-to-face sales mentality.
