The heart of a Nova is the spool valve. Basically, it acts as several on/off valves. When the trigger is released, the spool allows air to enter the dump chamber and the area in front of the barrel, pushing it into the gun. When you pull the trigger it shuts off the air flow into the dump chamber and opens the output of the dump chamber, allowing all the air in the dump chamber and the air holding the barrel in to go out the barrel. The barrel is then returned forward by the spring. Release trigger, rinse, repeat.
