The "I'm sending my gun to SP" post

Well, as an employee of the Smart Parts repair facility, I can offer some tips to you guys to make the operation smoother.

PLEASE type\neatly write out your phone number and address. We really don't know where you live, so make it easy on us.

PLEASE don't be angry when writing us letters, accusing us of the troubles that you've created. I can't tell you how many times I've opened a box, read a letter saying you've never played with the gun, and then found sand in the breech, it just doesn't happen. Don't lie, it really won't help.

PLEASE write us a note about what you'd like done with the gun, or problems that you've run into. Include every thing you've done that MIGHT have caused a problem. More details= faster tech work.

PLEASE leave a note to call before we fix anything. Nothing peeves us more than fixing a gun, then having to tear it back down because you can't afford a 2 dollar wiring harness. (Shocker, in this case)

PLEASE call and check on the status of your gun if you haven't heard from us within 2 weeks of sending it in. Don't call a month later and be irate that it's not done yet. Check ups are good!

PLEASE DO NOT AIM ME WITH GUN PROBLEMS. POST IN THE MAIN FORUM, I WILL TRY AND HELP WHEN I CAN

How to shave webbing and custom paint shell

I have been getting a lot of requests for helping others shave the webbing, smoothing the body, and custom painting the shell. So, I have decided to create this how to thread for all those interested in this process. If you want to see how a finished shell looks, click on the first link in my sig for pics.

If this gets lots of views, maybe Dre or Prairie will sticky it.

Shaving:
Time required: about 30-60 minutes. You can use a sharp knife that you periodically heat-up to slice through the rubber webbing. I used an exacto knife (no heat) to cut the rubber off. Try to get as close to the plastic shell, but don't worry if some rubber remains...you'll take care if it in the next step.

Smoothing:
Time required: about 4 days (1 day if you are very experienced with auto body repair, but then you probably wouldn't need these instruction!).
1) Use masking tape to cover all holes on the bottom and the front of the shell. Tape from the inside of the shell so the sticky side of the tape is facing outwards.
2) Use coarse grit (~60-80) sand paper to take off the remaining rubber and roughen up the plastic.
3) Use high grit (~120) sand paper to smooth out the roughness.
4) Apply a thin layer of Bondo brand Glazing and Spot Putty. This comes in a tube - no mixing required. Let dry a few hours. Sand down with 120-150 grit sand paper.
5) Apply another thin layer of Putty, let dry, then sand with 200 grit sand paper.
6) Apply another thin layer of Putty, let dry, then wet sand with 400 grit sand paper.
The "shell" should now be nice and smooth to the touch and to look at. If any imperfections still exist, repeat step 6 until smoothed out.

Painting:
Time required: 1-3 days, depending if you are applying more than one color.
1) Spray 2 light coats of Krylon Fusion paint to the shell, waiting 20-30 minutes between coats.
2) Wait to dry 1 hour, then wet sand with 400 grit sand paper.
3) Repeat steps 1-2.
4) Spray 4 more coats, let dry overnight.
Skip steps 5-6 if you only want a solid color, then go to step 7.
5) If you want to add stripes or another color, use the blue 14-day painters tape to cover the areas you do not want to get repainted. This tape will make clean lines, but still remove easily, without residue, within a few days of placement.
6) Spray 2-4 thin coats of the new color/stripes. Let dry overnight, then remove tape carefully.
7) Spray 6 thin coats of (any brand) clear coat, allowing to dry between coats per manufacturer's directions.

Supplies and Cost:
Xacto Knife $1
Wet/dry sand paper, assorted grit $4
Sanding Brick (optional) $3
Bondo brand Glazing and Spot Putty $2
Applicator/plastic spatula (or get one from the kitchen) $1
Blue Painter's Tape $2
Krylon Fusion Paint $4 per color
Clear Coat Paint $1
These are the basics and some optional items. Most of you will already have some of these at home...look around and you might be surprised what you find!

Best Regulator - Mystery Inline = AKA 2Liter

Various Other Facts:
-High Pressure and Low Pressure tanks will both work on the ION, but SOME dropoff has been noted using a low pressure tank.
-Do NOT put Dow33 or any type of grease in your ASA.
-Any hopper will work with the ION. Halo, Revvy, Reloader, etc. will work fine.
-There is no recharge setting . Forget anything anyone says about it.

If you’re confused about setting your gun up, get the ROF UP (Single red blink) setting and press the power button all the way up. Get the Dwell Down(Solid red) setting and put it all the way down, then get the Dwell UP(Solid Yellow) setting and press the power button 45 times(45 is a good setting for efficiency and avoiding shootdown). Set your pressure at 170psi(Via the regulator, turn it counterclockwise all the way then clockwise until your gauge reads 170). Go to a chrono. If you’re shooting a bit under, raise your pressure and vice versa. If your shooting way under, raise your dwell(Solid Yellow) a couple of clicks/and raise your pressure slightly and vice versa. If you are getting shoot-down, raise your dwell(Solid Yellow) 2 clicks and it should be gone. If it’s not, raise your pressure, but don’t go over 200psi.
Again, there is no recharge setting. Lowering your ROF inversely raises your recharge rate BUT THERE IS NO RECHARGE RATE SETTING!!!!

Original Thread thanks go out to trillion411, and xslickwilly who created the two ultimate threads, gratitude should go to them, I simply revised and fixed links.

Please P.M. a moderator if you feel there needs to be revisions/additions. (drefish99, Prairie, Smallies, wolverine, ft57 )

First, if your Ion will not turn on, make sure to try replacing the battery, and make sure that the eye harness is plugged in, and not torn.
If you have done these things, and your Ion will still not turn on, try doing this:

1. Disassemble your gun down to the solenoid assembly. If you do not know how to do this, check your manual and read the stickies.

2. Once the solenoid assembly is out of the gun, find the little greyish white button on the left side of the board (the one that the red rubber membrane/on off button covers), and pull onto it softly.
A common reason that many Ions will not turn on is because this little button will stick pushed in, and will not return. By doing this, you are making the switch return.
**DO NOT PULL TOO HARD, OTHERWISE YOU MIGHT BREAK IT!**
I am not responsible if you somehow mess up your Ion while doing this.

3. Now, re-assemble your Ion. Assuming that it works great now (as it should), go mow some faces.

Just trying to help out.
