I would suggest starting off with a mechanical marker. Reason being they will be more reliable than the electronic one for you starting out.

If you're not worried about that then you can find some very inexpensive electronic markers (Azodin markers, DP, Ions to name a few) but even though the marker may be inexpensive you should seriously entertain getting a high pressure air tank (more expensive) over the traditional CO2 tank and a force fed hopper over a gravity hopper. The majority of electronic markers out there can not run off CO2. And being electronic you'll be able to fire full auto, burst, ramping etc.. and will need a force fed hopper to keep up with that rate of fire.

Mechanical markers can run off CO2 (inexpensive compared to high pressure air) and do not require force fed hopper to operate properly.

Proton

I just bought the proton at my local pro shop with tax for $345 best money I ever spent!

Very Light
Very consistant
Got it dirty and functioned very well
solid construction
close bolt system
Looks great

The marker has a lot of positive reviews and for the price it cant be beat

Yeah I've heard real good reviews on the proton and was set on it but if i can find a pristine used axe for the same price i might get that.

I saw you were also looking at an axe what sold you on the proton?

both excellent choices. i would shoot both guns gladly. for me it would come down to the price. however, its your preference you should be worried about, axe is poppet, proton is spool valve, both are great but you should try them out for yourself first. both guns can be found for around 250

I appreciate all the information on this thread. Looking for the same reasons, more so just to play rec ball with coworkers, maybe more if people approach me to do so at the field we play. My shop owner could talk to me for hours and he is a great resource too. Thanks guys!

I bought The proton Because I went down to my local proshop which is owned by a friend of mine I talked to him and the captain of his speedball team they both agreed that The proton out of the box performs just as well as an Etek 4. The axe is nice but I dont like the way it feels in my hand.

The proton has alot of the features of the higher end markers at a very good price plus it comes in awesome colors!

agreed. feels similar to a luxe ergonomics wise, and they are very cheap. just picked up a used one for 175, works fine.

Why are the mechanical markers more reliable than the electronic ones?

In general there are less parts to them that can be negatively effected by weather and dirt.

Take this with a grain of salt, but generally mech markers can get pretty dirty and still function whereas on an electro, if you get dirt in the solenoid, eyes, board, or other spots it may go down.

With electric guns you will need to be more careful about keeping it clean and keeping it dry.

that said, I have a few cockers and a few DM's i interchange them depending on how/where/with whom I am playing.

here goes "ego vs. geo" buy a geo. you would not need the efficiency of a ego anyway

Why would you not need the efficiency? For me, gas consumption rates play a huge role in what gun I purchase.

Hey guys, looking to start paintballing. Ideally, I'd be going 1 day on the weekends for about 3-4 hours with friends.

Does this look good to start with? I have a $350 budget.

-Dangerous Power E1 - $185
-Halo B V35 with aluminum rip drive hopper - $100
-Ninja HPA Tank 48/3000 with adjustable regulator - $50

Are there any better guns in the $200 range or should I scout for a used $200 gun? I found a PMR 2011 for $180 on some other site.

not sure on the prices of fills now but air used to be pretty cheap. i always preferred mech markers because most of the electronics i owned had a tendency to go down when it was least expected / most inconvenient with the exception of the shocker.

Sounds good, I'll try to get one used. If not, are there any better $200 guns than the DP E1? What about that GOG $200 gun?

I went for the first time last week was amazing. Decided to go full force and get my own equipment. Was able to get a used Etek3 with Ninja tank and dye rotor hopper. Good buy? Suggestion on upgrades or other markers that are quieter, lighter, and less kick?
