How can a team just turn pro out of nowhere? In the NPPL all you need is money and you dont even have to work your way up the ranks...Thats very sad!!!

The answer would be a bit convoluted.

For one thing, there are a large number of "legacy" teams that have been pro since there's been a "pro". Ironmen, Avalanche, Aftershock to name three. And another group of teams that have been pro for long enough that they may as well be legacy teams, such as Arsenal (formed as a pro team in 2004), XSV (started as a D1 team in 2004, moved up to pro in 2005), Dynasty (who went pro in 2001 after years of roster fluctuation in the divisional ranks), Red Legion (pro in 2004, I think they played some divisional paintball before that) and Damage (who started in D2, moved up to D1 and then to Pro in 2008). Other pro teams who worked their way up the ranks would be CEP, 187, Vicious, NEH & Naughty Dogs (both now defunct) & X-Factor. I’m sure there are others, but I don’t feel like searching around the web right now.

The only PSP pro teams that I can think of off the top of my head who were formed to be pro were Heat and Infamous (and Infamous was coming out of the Miami Effect / Oakland Assassin teams, so they weren’t new to pro when they started in pro).

Where it becomes less straight forward is teams like Aftershock. The TEAM has been pro but they reinvent their roster every few years and sometimes field a team that is made up of a significant number of non-pro (ranked) players who are being brought into their program at the pro level.

Not sure if that helps any.

*edit: forgot about the Legion

So basically most of the mainstay teams have worked their way through the divisional rankings in one way or another to EARN the right to be called pro. This is how it should be done.

Simply throwing a bunch of money at a failing league to be inserted into the pro category doesn't do anything for the team or for the league (aside from padding the lague's operating budget, allowing it to cling to life for one more season). Witness Phoenix Contact's epic fail last season for proof.

...and people wonder why the NPPL is hanging on by their fingernails.

Well, that's not how Heat did it, and they seem to have turned out ok.
And there are a number of teams that did it that way who haven't done nearly as well as Heat did. I think each instance should be evaluated independently. But that's just my opinion.

I have no knowledge of the NPPL's operating budget, nor any knowledge (beyond speculative) about how they operate their business but Paul Richards paints an interesting picture in his blog (View from the Deadbox) about how moves like this could help the NPPL and 7-man. As for hurting the team, so long as they understand they're going to take their lumps early on, I don't see how.

The only thing (again, in my opinion) that is damaged is the reputation of the "pro" division and ranking.

Again, I don't know anything about the NPPL's operations, but I don't think allowing Phoenix Contact or Crush to play pro has anything at all to do with why the NPPL is 'hanging on by their fingernails' (if, in fact, they are). Maybe you have the causality reversed there?

I agree, a case-by-case basis. This is why I said "most".

I am a loyal follower of Baca's blog as well.

However, I believe the reputation of the "pro" ranking being damaged is a big deal. It pushes the entire league into irrelevance if the top tier of players are seen as being illegitimate, or having "bought their way in", as Contact and now Crush have. After all, if all you need to do is throw money around, then it calls into question the entire divisional system as a feeder for the pros.

The league is hurting financially, therefore they let teams buy their way in and use that money to pad their operating budget (read: the money they use to book venues, hire staff and advertise). The fact that teams are allowed to buy into the pro ranking without working their way up through the divisionals is the effect, not the cause.

We (Phoenix contact) did not in any way other than pay our entry fee, buy our way into pro.
