Gat more then likely came from the Angel Gat.

Gat is slang for gun, Angel used it to label a marker and try to make it more hip to combat the egos and shockers of that era

It's not just a paintball term. It was 1930's & 40s prohibition era slang for any automatic machine gun. Gangstas or paintballers did not invent the term.
