When it comes to a low cost backup I like something that I can have sit in a gearbag for a long period of time then be pulled out and almost always be guaranteed to work. With that said I gotta say a Tippmann 98 Custom would be a fair piece to have as a backup within that price range. 98 Customs have stood the test as rentals for fields all over the world, beaten and battered but they keep on going.

Currently I got a nice little Tippmann 68 Carbine(Not a 98 Custom but close) that I have in my gearbag if my main marker would happen to go down.

First question I'd ask to that is "backup to what?". If you're backing up an Ego11, a $150 backup is a big leap down the chain. If you're backing up an Axe, you could maybe find some good options with diligent shopping. If you're backing up an X7, something along the lines of a 98 Custom would be not only appropriate, but likely under your budget.

Well anywho an ion makes a great back up gun as I keep one in a store bag for later use as always. I've never had a problem with my main so I never really got around to it. Great Value, Great Results! You can't go wrong with a tippmann neither.
