I'm not sure I agree with not being centered on the steps. I don't think it takes away from the shot, and it would make for a rather boring composition.
I see exactly where you guys are coming from about that dark feeling though. To me, this looks more like something you'd see on halloween than christmas. It's mostly the location, I don't think the pose is creepy per say, but the location makes it seem that way. I'm ticked at myself for shooting there. I think the family is fine with it though, but this would have turned out so much better indoors in front of a christmas tree or something warm and cute and such.
