I have to design a postcard for the local chamber. I think I might go to our dinky downtown and use this idea as the front of the card.

i hate you for getting to shoot in a gym like that, my schools gym is a photo nightmare. Dark, no real windows, and banks of yellow lights, and then even yellower lights. It is a nightmare to color correct and get a decent exposure.

Photos look good though. I usually shoot from the right side of the hoop just because most players are right handed and I seem to get more faces in my shots that way.

thanks man! yeah our gym is pretty sweet, but i still have to use ISO 5k at 2.8 to get 1/320th.. and it's bright. so i pity the guy who has to shoot in anything darker

next time i go out i'll check out the right side of the hoop i don't know much about basketball, i just shoot what looks cool

edited my post with 2 more

i usually shoot 3200 or 4000, 2.8 and get 1/320 or 1/400. I usually underexpose 2/3 of a stop then boost in post if necessary. I shoot sports from the opponents end, and right side most of the time, because that is where I have had the best results. For basketball, i like to shoot either under the hoop or in the corner, and then at the gym I shoot at, there is a balcony above the one hoop and I have had good results shooting down onto the hoop from the right side.

ah okay. i'm exposing correctly, or maybe a 1/3rd over so that's why i'm up that high. I wonder how much latitude the raw file has for boosting in post.

I've been switching sides with the periods but i usually chill with the cheerleaders under the net with a wide or a 50, and in the back corner with an 80-200 like you said. in the back corner i found i can get good midcourt shots with faces.

your exposures look fine, i underexpose to keep the uniforms from blowing out from the super direct lighting.

Damn, I feel fortunate. I can shoot 1/150th-1/200th@iso 1600 with my 70-200 F4 L wide open. There's a women's game tomorrow night, I might go shoot it.

1/150 - 1/200 is not nearly fast enough... You absolutely need 1/320, bare minimum. I usually shoot faster than that.
