Switch or Opto Trigger?
So what are your opinions about using switch vs. opto triggering? I'd had problems with bounce on previous markers with opto, but they weren't an Eclipse...
Also sometimes had problems with opto when shot in the trigger.
Just wondering what you all recommend? Seems like opto would be ideal since there are no mechanical parts to fail?

I use opto. I don't even have the screw in my gun trigger that activates the micro switch, therefore I obviously do not use micro at all. My switch doesn't even click or anything because of no screw. Much better to use otpo.

I'm pretty sure it the only thing that matters is what you prefer. Each one of them shoot the gun, you just have to pick one.
Also what's to say the opto-sensor couldn't stop working anyways? It's not any more impervious to harm than the microswitch.

Yep, there are upsides and down sides to both shot actuation methods - as already mentioned, the opto switch could get dirty, but equally, microswitches can wear out. There are other things to consider, but basically, the message is that nothing is perfect.
It should be possible to control trigger bounce on both the optical switch and the microswitch with the board settings available - along with sensible trigger set up - so I wouldn't let past experience with other optical switches concern you. Then again, if that experience has made you more comfortable with a microswitch, then choose the microswitch. After all, that's the whole point of having the choice available.
So yes, in a way it is a matter of preference. There are genuine differences between the two methods, and there are advantages and disadvantages to both, but there is no clear cut answer to which is better. At the end of the day, it is just a matter of picking the one you prefer, and then adjusting the board settings accordingly.

Okay, let me pose the question another way. Have any of you ever had trouble with the opto sensor getting gunked up due to a ball hit on the trigger? This was a real concern with my Fusion.

Nope and I've gotten shot in the trigger badly before.

Got shot in the trigger real bad last weekend... There was even paint all inside on my board and the opto sensors and everything... Still was working fine though!

I prefer micro ... if you want, catch me at LVP and ill setup your trigger how I normally do mine with the micro. Everyone seems to love the way they feel so you might too.
The plus of the PE opti is that its a break beam and not a bounce beam like your old DP board

Thanks, II. I was thinking about running down there today to dwell-tune it, so I will stop in to see you for sure if I do.

What I actually do is set the trigger using the 'filter options' when using Opto...(basically I set the front and rear travel stops to both ends of the "activation window" 0 for the bottom & 100 for the top - similar to the trigger adjustment "stickied post" either in here or the Ego forum)...
THEN, I set the micro switch activation screw so the micro switch "clicks" the same time the solenoid is activated via the Opto setting....
Therefore, if anything ever happens to the Opto usage on the board (ie dirty, paint, etc.) then all I have to do is change the board setting to 'SWITCH' and I'm off playing again in a matter of seconds vs. having to reset the trigger all over again for switch activation.
I always like to have a 'back up plan'....anyone who plays much Raceto X events knows that a small malfunction can cause Havoc between points!!..
