They have more control/maneuverability. No board is ever faster than another, but a topmount could make you faster on a technical course due to having more control.

If you like the feeling of a double drop, or just drop decks in general, you can still set them up with grippy wheels to have cornering ability. I personally think a double-drop for dh is a bit much, but many people do use drop decks.
Edit: PB4L are you riding a Seacow or Seacalf? I just set up my Darby to the 26''wb instead of 28'' and want to try it out. My front foot will be right over the trucks now as opposed to just behind.

I'm on a Sea Calf, although it looks like I'll be on a GMR Tucker within the week (getting flowed one by the company owner
). The calf wheelbase is 26.5" and I love it. I have it setup with a RB toestop so my foot sits over the the back set of front bolts and it feels unbelievably stable and responsive. Standing over the trucks is definitely the way to go.
